Playing vs. Collecting Shmups

Post by durias »

Okay.

I'm prone to collecting things. So, when I got into shmups, I told myself that I was in it to PLAY the games, not collect them (i.e. scratches are okay if the game is still playable, it doesn't matter what edition a game is when I buy it, etc.) I don't think collecting shmups is bad or anything, it's just not for me. Or so I thought.

I was doing pretty well. I picked up Giga Wing scratched up but playable. I picked up second editions of Soukyugurentai and Raiden Project. When I bought a sealed copy of Ikaruga for Dreamcast, I had it in mind that I'd open it up and play it, eventually.

Today, however, I received my sealed copy of Dodonpachi DAI-OU-JOU (PS2). Now I'm thinking that maybe I should keep these two games unopened and buy other copies of Ikaruga and Dodonpachi Daioujou to play.

Advice?

Oh. And all my games ar NTSC-J if that makes any difference.

I don't understand what's up with collecting unsealed games. What's beautiful or good about a game is the game itself, not the CD-ROM or box on which it is stored.

I can understand people collecting paintings or whatever, but collecting games ? Just collect game data so you can play them again later. That's all T.T~!

I collect more than I play. I just don't have that much time anymore to play all of them extensively. =/

You need 3 copies, one for display, one for your collection, and one for extra.

Cool. But, just to clarify, "don't be stupid" means "go ahead and open those puppies up," yeah?

I like collecting things, but video games of any kind are meant to be played, not collected. Unless they're sports games, then they're meant to be used as clay pigeons.

A sealed game is like an old sealed pack of baseball cards. It's an investment that can be appreciated without opening. I try and have sealed copies of games that actually mean something to me. I took a liking to Winds of Thunder, Star Parodier, and Final Zone II, so when I found a seller on ebay with sealed copies, I picked them up. I play my used ones today, but the sealed ones are like homage to their utter coolness or something.

I gave up on "collecting" years ago, being around the scene for so many years I've seen games go up and down in value, but on the whole everything loses value. It's just plastic and paper, what good will that do you when you're dead and turned to dust? That being said, I still have some unopened PC Engine and PSX games (more out of laziness than anything else).

Collect games to play them!

I am a games player with a rather large collection of games. I too have little time for playing but the great thing about shoot them ups is that they are great for quick and short game playing :D I open up my shooties as soon as they are in my home and I proceed to give it a quick play at least - even if I may be focus on another game.

Now my Role Playing Game collection…I have a great amount of seal games and they just continue to pile up (just got Persona 3) I have every intention for playing them but time restrictions are keep me from getting deep into them.

I cant get into the collection of seal games :? Games are to be played. If one have means to have a seal copy AND a play copy then that is cool, but to buy a game and NEVER play it is not make sense to me :?

I am semi collector but I like to collect what I will play.
One thing however is I collect console, especially odd and obscure ones like the Pippin@world and Funtech A'can.

Collecting is retarded. It just means you are more concerned about values and such, to be honest videogames are the worst investments.

For every RSG there are a hundred thousand Madden 96's, at least if you have a wank over madden it won't break your bank.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I collect games but rip open that shrink wrap without hesitating. I bought the thing b/c I want to play it. Now I do keep it in prestine shape, I'm deff OCD that way.

But shrink wrap does not make a game special, the condition and whats pressed on that disc matters more.

I snagged a copy of sapphire sealed and ripped it open... never got the sealed game crap and why shrink wrap can make a game worth more money. It should be the condition of the game is in itself.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I only collect games to play.
Plus, with Alcohol 120% and the like, you can play your games and keep 'em in mint condition. Have your cake and eat it, too!

I always buy games used when I can. As long as it plays and will continue to play for a long while it's all good. Cheaper too. I will collect items related to my favorite games however, such as posters, figures and whatnot.

open them! don't collect for profit, there are many other faster ways to make money out there. i.e. buying lumines and selling it on ebay.

if you're concerned about keeping your games nice, either:

1. BE CAREFUL!

or

2. Make backups and play those. and don't be lame and backup games that you don't own.

Keeping sealed games is kinda assholish IMO, as there's someone out there who would love to be playing that game right now...

Don't break the biodegradable plastic sealing that'll rot away in a year, or else it'll lose 50% of its value.

To preserve the sealing better, you must slather it in butter.
