I dunno, I never played the N64 one, but the gameplay looked pretty much like the PS2 Star Soldier game...

Looks pretty cool. Could that be a widescreen mode?

Same here, thanks for posting that! :D

I think it looks isometric because of the angle of the person filming the gameplay, but I could be wrong. Was he using the VC controller??

I can't say for sure if the gamer in the video is using the classic controller, but I know in Takahashi's original blogpost, he made sure to note that the classic controller will be supported.

I'm only going from what I can see from the video though. My brain could possibly be seeing things that are not actually there, but try to look closely.
Also, a Wii Remote when held sideways is extremely short in the dimension normal to the user, whereas the player here appears to be holding something a bit larger in his hands.

That's probably a classic controller. You can see the wire going from it to the table, and there's a wiimote sitting on the table. On the other hand, I guess it could just be a security wire to prevent people from walking off with a free wiimote.

The background looks skewed. Take a look at about 25 seconds in - there are platforms on the sides of the screen and a definite tilt to them. This could just be a background effect, though. I dimly recall a areas in Ikaruga where the background was tilted, and that game was definitely no RayStorm.

I'm glad to see them continuing this updated series. While I wasn't a fan of the PS2/GC remake, I enjoyed the PSP remake of a remake. Hopefully this Wii remake of a remake of a remake is even better.
bVork it up!

is this going to be a hard copy or virtual release? has it been stated yet?
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

It hasn't been stated, but I'm assuming a hard copy. The game played on the Caravan tour was disc based at least...

SWEET, nice find! I love the way it loads, too! Now they just need to get some gameplay footage up so we can get a better view of how this shmup plays/

They have chosen a good angle to be able to utilize 3d and still have the game play like it's 2d.

I wonder why they don't include Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth in the chronological table, was it so bad?

So they're possibly ashamed of SS: VE, huh? heh.

Site is still too early. Looks like the same two pics they had on IGN and NP. Still looking forward to this though.

SS R and Dr. Mario 4P together are a formidable challenge to all of what XBLA (except for GW of course) and PSN offered in their early months. Now give us some real storage options, Nintendo.....

Nintendo announced that WiiWare will launch in NA on May 12th. Hopefully Star Soldier R will be one of the first WiiWare games offered.

WiiWare launches in Japan on March 25th. 'Star Soldier R' will be one of the nine launch titles and will cost 800 Wii points. :D

I wonder if they will get a lot of flak over the viewpoint they have chosen. On the one hand it's not really effective 3d and on the other hand it might as well have been fully 2d. I'm sure it has made the game easier and cheaper to make, though, which is probably what a shmup needs to be these days.

Yeah I mentioned this last year (see previous page posts), but nobody seemed to care. Although I guess it shouldn't matter much since its not a danmaku with small hitbox.

I think its a simple matter of marketing this as not simply a 2D shooter. Maybe they had to convince some executives that its was worthy to release on a console since it had pretty 3d graphics and look.

That video looks sweet! Hudson says that they are evaluating bringing it to the market in the US:

I hope they do! :D

Are they saying this has just the 5 minute time attack? In the article, it's being likened to the time-based Pac-Man Championship. Still, this does look good.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

The game has been listed in the ESRB, according to NeoGAF.

It's coming.

That's an absolute steal. I was watching this thread thinking the whole time what I'd be willing to pay for this title. Being a big Hudson fan (and having already bought quite a number of PC Engine shooters already via Wii VC for around 800 points or so), i would have considered AU$30 to be a pretty reasonable price. (800 Wii Points is AU$12).

I'm beginning to wonder exactly how much physical distribution of games costs publishers. While the Phantom was total vapor-ware, I'm wondering if we're not going to see a tremendous downslide in physically delivered media in the coming years in other consoles while internet-delivered games take off.

It'll certainly piss the distribution guys off, but quite frankly instant access to games on release day at lower prices and without all the dramas of region issues (part of which is dealing with fuss distributors) is a win for gamers.

This is still in effect. WiiWare content is region restricted. Just like XBLA and PSN, though in the latter case it's at least possible to create a japanese account and get the games through that.

Such a shame, as I love the Soldier games and might snag a cheap Wii just for Star Soldier R and some other WiiWare games.

Well, it's certianly Star Soldier .. >_>

Hopefully they manage to do something more than take the original and slap on cheap-o 3d enemies and explosions.

Yes it is, but one would hope with the next generation of consoles that appear in 3-5 years time coupled with the ever increasing rate of broadband adoption that the whole concept of "regions" is left for dead by console distributors.

Nintendo have historically been the worst as a console developer when it comes to region restrictions (other companies imposed the restrictions, but Nintendo has been by far the most tenacious about enforcing them). Wii VC is starting to see a few Japan-only releases hitting PAL and US consoles (I'm looking forward to Do Rei Mi in a few weeks time). Perhaps these are all signs that the big N is loosening up?

One would hope, yeah. Sometimes it just seems that it's the game companies themselves who want to restrict their games' distribution.

I also belong to the ol' stickler crowd who likes to get physical copies of their games, so I actually hoped Star Soldier R would be released the "old-fashioned way".
