I heard Icky Thump by The White Stripes on the radio once last week for the first time, and I haven't heard it since. I still remember it. I think I need this album. That is one whacked out song. It isn't pretty but the weirder side of me loves it.

Genius is the wrong word, that's more along the lines of what I like about them from a philosophical standpoint. Like Husker Du growing handlebar moustaches because hardcore was getting too conformist.

Matt & Kim - S/T - grand, they have a great understanding of how to do pop and the electronic angle is somewhat new.

Nice, Madsteel. It's a shame I didn't check out the Headcoats earlier, they're bad ass. The strait up blues songs can get old but stuff like 'I want a punk girl' and 'Art or Arse?' etc. are great

Icky Thump is a good song. I can't vouch for the rest of the album but White Stripes seem like a good enough band with a documented Headcoats influence. I've been meaning to check out more of their stuff. Check out 'Black Math' from one of their other albums (think it's on youtube still)

judee sill - s/t+ heart food -- I thought her voice was a little too nasally the first time I heard it. Glad I gave them a second chance. Very pretty.
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales/Emperor's Return
Lisa Germano - Geek the Girl
Sabres of Paradise - Haunted Dancehall -- back to trying to get more into electronic music (have lots of others to check out this week). Not as good as the above three but still nice.

This was the part I meant mostly:

everyone's rules...effects, solos, and mainstream influences were all taboo in late 80's punk

The idea that anybody was imposing a set of rules is what I was telling you to not kid yourself about. I realize that certain pundits say otherwise but that's usually because they themselves were part of the scene they were trying push. Maybe Sammy from Fang thought J Mascis was doing some taboo shit but so what.

Anyway, I have decided to give Dinosaur Jr another try. My buddy and I went to The Valley show the other night and noticed that Dan had a sweet new purple sparkly guitar. We were guffawing with him after and I made some remark about it sounding better than it looked. He said it was J Mascis signature thingy and I laughed. He turnt it over and it really was! Later on I said to my buddy "HAHA I can't believe he has a J Mascis guitar", to which he replied "Dude! Mascis is a little tone KING!" and went on to explain that Mascis was one of the only guys of the era to collect the old gear and bring the sweet dirty tones to the American punk masses. Now that I respect. And it's also something that would totally have been way over my head when I was 14-17 and listening to Dinosaur. It's good to have a friend who's ten years older to help put that kind of thing into perspective for me. I'm pretty certain I'd never have paid any attention to Dinosaur Jr again but now I'm quite curious. I have no idea how I'll get past the whiny vocals though...

I've also come to the not so painful conclusion that GG Allin has plenty of songs that I like. This particular myspace for him has four good tunes: http://www.myspace.com/ggfuckingallin I especially dig "Don't Talk To Me".

On topic: I just got done with three days of no music and can't remember what albums I was into before that.

Laura Nyro - Eli & the 13th Confession -- Sadly, I was only familiar with the dorky Three Dog Night cover of Eli's Coming. The original should never have been covered by anyone ever. Some other great songs too, but I wish the rest could match the energy of that song.

Urgh! Music from my youth ITT!

As far as Celtic Frost, I'd definitely pick up To Mega Therion. Into the Pandemonium is when they started to get a bit silly, but still, it has the best cover of "Mexican Radio" you'll ever hear. See also: Hellhammer - Apocalyptic Raids. Venom? I'd recommend the remastered version of Black Metal. Dealing With It is my favorite DRI record. I loved Crossover and 4 of a Kind back when, but the last time I heard them,...not as much. Mebbe I wasn't in the mood?

Now, let's talk about Voivod. Killing Technology and Dimension Hatross are both excellent, but are just building up to what will be their masterpiece: Nothingface. Everything that came after was pretty awful. I think they were too easily influenced by whatever producer they were working with at the time. By the way: really nice guys! It's a damn shame about Denis (RIP, Piggy).

I guess you like the more blatantly punk-influenced stuff? Here are some semi-well known picks:

-Exodus - Bonded by Blood -- you've got to hear this! no thrash I've heard compares.
-early death metal like Carcass' Symphonies of Sickness (seconded), Morbid Angel's Altars of Madness, Immolation - Dawn of Possession, maybe Morbid Saint and Ripping Corpse (not such a fan of the latter two but I also don't like too obvious of a punk influence).
-Manilla Road - Crystal Logic -- just because it is awesome.

If you like what you hear from Venom and D.R.I (And since you seem to like Celtic Frost and Voivoid) do yourself a favor and pick this album up:



Probot is basically am 80's and 90's Metal compilation/tribute by Dave Grohl (Of the Foo Fighters/Nirvana). He got the vocalists from a lot of bands and put this project together. This CD has Cronos (from Venom), Max Cavalera (Sepultura), Lemmy (Motorhead), Mike Dean (C.O.C), Kurt Brecht (D.R.I), Lee Dorrian (Catherdral), Wino (The Obsessed/Hidden Hand/Etc.), Tom G. Warrior (Celtic Frost), Snake (Voivoid), Eric Wagner (Trouble), and King Diamond (Mercyful Fate), along with a very special guest for the Hidden Track entitled "I Am The Warlock".

Fuck I'm Dead- If Agoraphobic Nosebleed were a death metal band, this would be it.

Burning Witch - Seriously heavy. Seriously slow. Insane vocals. (if you like this, listen to Khanate)

Acrimony - Incredibly underappreciated stoner/doom band.

Circle of Dead Children - Best band name ever.

If you like DRI get the COC album Technocracy. It's the only album they recorded of that style and it's quite excellent.

Good Clean Fun - Positively Positive 1997-2002

A greatest hits from a DC hardcore band. I really don't agree with their attitude, or at least the 'let's make fun of geeks/outsiders' conformist group mentality aspect, but songs like 'Coll-edge' and 'Loser.com' are at least catchy.

Sugar Ray - Best of

I used to hate everyone in high school for liking them. Three years later I have to admit these are pretty good songs, even if Sugar Ray probably didn't write half of them. Highlights are 'Answer the Phone' and 'Mean Machine.'

Scratch Acid - Greatest Gift

Undecided. Seems pretty cool, yet I get the feeling the same thing has been done better elsewhere. Apparently some of the guys in this band later formed Jesus Lizard who are pretty awesome.

I went to shop nearby and they had this used CD. It was Japanese, and the title and cover of it were so awesome that I just had to buy it.

And hey, it's pretty cool! The usual japanese twisted fusion with jazz and electronica I guess...

By the way, the album is Starship in Worship... I'll scan the cover for you. It's something a shmup fan cannot miss!

I'm sure they have better albums, but this one is really nice and was easy to get. To bad that 'Secret box' by them is long out of print.

Mostly been listening to promos (IE albums that don't yet exist) so not a lot to add to this ongoing discussion; though a friend of mine keeps playing 'Death' for me--Symbollic seems like a well constructed album.

Yup, David Yow and David Wm. Sims went on to form Jesus Lizard. Both were great bands, in my humblest of opinions. Plus, I give 'em extra points because Scratch Acid were local boys. They played a truly scorching reunion gig here last year.

I think you get a whiff of the derivative because they did rip off a lot from The Birthday Party (and by the by, if you've never heard the BP, you need to drop everything right now and check 'em out).

Gotta be Individual Thought Patterns. Or The Sound of Perseverance. I'm more keen on the early 90s death metal sound. Symbolic is a middle ground between the sludgy death metal sound and tech-thrash. Don't particularly care for it, especially the vocals. They are noticeably weakened from the old death growl and not quite at the raspy shriek of the last album.

Wu-Tang Clan - 36 Chambers -- Yeah, I hadn't heard this one before and it doesn't quite live up to the hype. Is nice though. I like Supreme Clientele more.

The Lilys are a decent shoegazer band. "In the Presence of Nothing" and "Eccsame the Photon Band" are their two shogaze albums, IIRC. The rest of their stuff is very .. different. I enjoy it, but you might not.
