The niche that has become shmups, the shrinking of the amount of developers just means games will get better. The amount of money one company can make is much larger as they have become closer to a monopoly.
Monopolies are associated with decreasing quality of goods and services. If Cave has no competition, it is highly likely that it will start to slide. The only way a monopoly could bring more goods to the table is if they had to stamp out competition to keep control of the market - and if they succeed in doing so, they will revert to just maintaining cruise control and not producing exceptional games.

...

Now that I think about it, I fear we're misusing the term 'monopoly'. Can Cave really be called a monopoly if the reason companies go out of business is not competition but a quickly shrinking market?

Word. I wish Raizing was still making games. And I wish they did a few more ports before they went as well. Batrider, Mahou, Greater Mahou, hell even bakraid on Saturn would have been so awesome.

About Success stop producing shooters, can anybody actually verify this with some links?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t the following the only companies still making shmups:

Alpha Systems
Cave
G-Rev
Konami
Midas
Moss

TAITO still publishes shooters however, as most of the latest Cave games on the PS-2 were published by them.

Are Eighting and Raizing two different dev teams or parts of the same company, or is it just a strange use of the '/' and it's really just all one name that should technically never be separated? Thanks!
I was wondering the same thing about Atlus / Cave Logo on some of their shooters?

I never knew this. Any links?

What's Squeenix by the way? Squeenix = Square/Enix?

Also Milestone, Treasure, Triangle Service, and Warashi. Starfish has a shmup coming out on the Wii this month (Shin Chuuka Taisen).

@ST Dragon:

Here's the thread I made here earlier in the year with a link to an article that described how Square-enix was downsizing Taito's divisions and eliminating unprofitable sectors (including shmups):

I'm wondering about how much SE slowed Taito down, though. Didn't the Taito Memories II collections come out after the merger? Also, they seem to be still supporting the DS and PSP too. The only shmups they released before the merger weren't made by them, aside from the Taito collections (actually, they seem to be mostly a publisher as of late anyway). I doubt there would be much more even without SE's involvement.

What bout Cave's Mushihimesama 2, any chance of it beeing ported to the PS-2/3?

That huge T-Rex 1st stage Boss chasing you down the hill, looks awesome! :shock:

Overall with the exception of Mushihimesama 2, I don't see that many exiting new shooter coming out these days. Most are uninspiring and heavily rely on reusing and recycling the same stuff!
Ibara & Raiden III come to mind and that obscure horrible excuse of a shooter: Giga Wing Generations!

Cave aren't porting anything atm because it's not profitable. This has been discussed at length. There's a 10,000-page thread about it.

@CIT

Naxat didn't go bankrupt.
