Which Parodius to get?

Post by whoisKeel »

I played the pce version on magic engine and I really enjoyed it. I only played the first level or so just to try it out. What would be the best version to buy and play, as a first time parodius player?

Any of them.. They don't differ greatly enough to warrant special attention to one.

Deluxe pack is available on Saturn and PS1. Both are great and include the origonal version and DA!

Chatting parodius ive never played. Saturn/PS1

Sexy parodius is cool, definately worth picking up. Again Saturn/PS1

I would recommend both deluxe pack and Sexy 100%. Both full of charm, excellent music, most of it is orchestrated on the 32bit versions.

Er.. the deluxe pack has Da! and Gokujou. The original was only released for the MSX (and the later Konami MSX collection available on the Saturn and PS1.)

I don't know which one is which, but I assumed the older looking one of the two on the dlx pack was the origonal.

Sorry.

FWIW I'd say I find Oshaberi (aka "Chatting") Paro the easiest, and either Gokujou or Sexy Paro the hardest.

You can't go wrong with any of them really though. :D

Argh! Let's decide for once.

You can go with this chronology:

1. Parodius (MSX)
2. Parodius Da! (Coin-op)
3. Gokujou Parodius (Coin-op)
4. Jikkyo Oshaberi Parodius (SNES)
5. Sexy Parodius (Coin-op)

Sexy is not the fourth, is the fifth (and the third coin-op). And the original is the MSX one.

Once again, with dates:

1988: Parodius (MSX)
1990: Parodius Da! (Coin-op)
1994: Gokujou Parodius (Coin-op)
1995: Jikkyo Oshaberi Parodius (SNES)
1996: Sexy Parodius (Coin-op)

I would go for Sexy Parodius, the secondary mission goals are a nice change. But Parodius DA! is a nice game too, and at least for the saturn it's more likely you'll get it cheaper.

I find that I just cannot collect the smiley coins or shoot the bulldozers enough to fulfill the quotas by the end of the level, without dying and restarting the level. Still, it's a fun game, even though there really isn't much of a boss. Just a mad rush to shoot all the targets before time is up, and then to avoid the leg when the naked woman turns over in bed at the end.

By far, my favorite one is Oshaberi Parodius.

BTW, all Parodius games (except for Sexy Parodius) are available on the Super Famicom.

The original MSX one isn't.

There's actually a NES version of Paroidus Da! It's actually pretty good from what I played on a emu. It actually came out in Europe, but it didn't come to the US. :( I heard that European NES games work on the US NES 2, though.

Oh yeah, the Saturn Parodius Deluxe Pack, the Gameboy Parodius Da!, and the NES Parodius Da! all came to Europe with the name "Parodius". The GB Parodius Da! is also in one of the Konami GB collections.

1) I do love Sexy, but I find the stage selection method quite annoying... I constantly need to look a chart in order to reach the stage I want to see... Winning all missions is extremely difficult (I mean, without cheating by dying a lot), and you even skip some of the more interesting stages...

To say it plain, I would rather have a "long" game that lets me do all the stages. If anyone finds the "darius fork method" annoying, I suggest to try Gokujou or Oshaberi instead.

2) Parodius NES has an extra dedicated stage.

3) Parodius Da! (coin-op) included in the deluxe pack has a secret "train" stage not included in the Snes version. The Psone deluxe pack is known to be worse than its SS counterpart.

4) The best Gokujou should be the Snes one, because it has secret characters (among them Kid Dracula). However, the gokujou included in the deluxe pack has arcade-perfect graphics and two-simultaneous play, so it's your choice.

5) Oshaberi Parodius for Snes has a battery built in to keep record of the faeires you save. However, you might want to go for the largely better "remake" subtitled "-forever with me-". Released for both SS and Psone, it's one of the rare Snes game which received a stand-alone port on 32bit. This time, the version to go for is the Psone, which has some extra bonus stages not present in the saturn one.

6) Among the secrets added in -forever with me- is again Kid Dracula.

Unless you know something we don't (and if so please share :)), the train stage is exclusive to the PS version of the deluxe pack.

I said it in the other Parodius thread, and I'll say it many more times:

Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius: Forever With Me, get it.

Not saying much, as the whole series is fantastic, not a dud among them, but Chatting is my favorite. And elbarto is totally right, it's definitely the easiest.

Hurray for any series of games that involves babies, cats, paper airplanes, and octupi as ships. It would be nice if they were more consistent with the character line up, I missed Michael the angel pig and Whats-his-name the sunfish in Oshaberi. The busty TwinBee boss makes up for it, just barely.

What? You mean, it's not there on the SS one? How weird. I do not have experience of that, I was just assuming the two versions to be identical... Especially since the SS version was released five or six months after the PSone's.

About -Forever with me-: yeah, I like this one a lot too. The faerie catching gives it tons of replay value. Plus, the Lethal Enforcers stage with the two Justifiers aiming at you is a blast! And last but not least, one of the two cats (Mike, iirc) has some of the best weaponry in the series.

GO SEXY!

It's the most amusing out of all of them. It's got Penguins and Pigs, and crying corn - you need nothing more.
The white clouds floating on the great blue sky
And the boiling red blood shed in fierce gaming
Those who give up halfway through
Their battered bodies will never forget!

The only Parodius I have never played is Jikkyo Oshaberi... I am a big fan of the series since the MSX... for me Parodius on MSX kind of played better than all the other Gradius games on the system.

Anyway... my fav one is Goukujyou Parodius on SNES... never played the Saturn or PSX versions, so I can't compare. But Gokujyou has a AMAZING level design, the difficulty is well balanced, and the wackyness rules.

Sexy comes in 2nd... I find it too frustrating at times, and the level selection indeed sucks.....

Well, personally, I always use the other cat, Ran. I dunno, maybe that's who you mean, or maybe the allure of Mike has escaped me. Ran's got the two homing bells, the reflecting beams, and the laser fire that is a series of missiles that turn 90 degrees to hit their target. I like him because he can easily do some major damage on a very low level, so the rank doesn't sky rocket all at once.

Lemme check on Gradius Homeworld... you're right, Ran, the white one! he rocks! Reflect laser, yeah! Like playing Gradius with the R-9

Mike has a neat-looking kotatsu shield, but that's it. Ran owns!

I still need Sexy Parodius but I'm sitting happy enough with both the Deluxe Pack and Chatting Parodius.

Chatting Parodius for the Saturn(PSX too I imagine) also features a female announcer. And yes both announcers "chat" during a two-player game. Level design it's not as solid as Gokujokyu(?) since the stages tend to run a bit long. Also the boss-rush was changed(From the SNES rev) in the Saturn version(Not sure on PSX) to a bunch of strange characters which kind of stink imo(Although the Penguin with the bucket on his head is awesome). Although a few awesome additions were made(Like the actual guns showing up in the Lethal Enforcers stage and taking potshots at you).

Sexy Parodius has some issues with mission difficulty. Like the first mission is freaking impossible(IMO) but one of the others(Destroy 8 digging machines I think) is ridiculously simple. I also never did beat the mission where you shoot/strip the geishas. Great game all the same but I would have loved to get a huge point bonus or even dare say an extra life for beating the mission instead of getting a different stage.

Again a fantastic series. Shame it hasn't been looked at for a next-gen sequel ala Gradius V. Aside from the general Gradius/Salamander/etc references we could see stages based on Konami's later games. Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Suikoden, ZOE, Winning Eleven(heh..maybe a minigame), and more. Not to mention the great characters that I imagine would be playable.

As far as fav character is concerned I'm still a Twinbee fan. Granted he's sort of fallen behind since Konami never really gave him the bullet-hell capabilities of say Ran, Mike, Kid Drac, etc. but I love 'em anyway.

As far as I know it works, but the PAL version uses the bottom row of tiles (only visible on a PAL system) for the powerup bar, so you can't see it on a US NES/TV.

dammit, i want some Parodius action again! i sold my deluxe pack (SAT) and regretted it almost immediately (no hard feelings though LS) because very soon after i really started to love Gradius and realized i hadn't really given Parodius a fair chance. now all this talk of Chatting and Sexy is making it worse. after looking at the Gradius base, Ran's power-up bar looks like a lot of fun. they will be mine.
I have no sig whatsoever.
