In case you all want to know, the word "güero" (wher-o) refers to someone who is light-skinned, regardless of race, and it's normally not offensive. (I equal it with calling someone "Rusty" over here). The opposite to it would be "moreno" (brunnette). HOWEVER, the way he was using it to refer to Twitch DID sound rude all right and offensive, almost derogatory and racist.


Being Mexican myself and living in the USA, I don't understand this "vato loco" sub-culture. It was cool for a while you know, with all that "keeping your latino heritage as a mexican-american, lowriders and paint jobs depicting aztec figures" crap, but advertising to everybody how much of a macho a person is by means of being a brute, abusing your wife, and pulling this kind of moronic shit speaks more of that person being insecure with his own masculinity.

I hope you guys remember me saying that he was drunk when this happend, as he was staggering when walking back n forth to the fridge.(I had consumed only two beers at the time, so I was still sober) And that as I became more "under the influence"(at home) I got more and more pissed off about it. Enough to confront him a few hours later that night. I wasen't talking quietly either...my voice was raised. It possible someone could have overheard.

I just need to forget about it, and bury it in the past. I might even cut my losses and forget about the CD's I let him borrow. They were the Vodkatron demo's (very important to me)... the whole album is being mixed, and I will have the complete package, so its really no loss.

Heh, try being half-Mexican (Mom's from Nuevo Laredo), half-English/Irish (Dad's from West Virginia), and a non-practicing, Agnostic Jew to boot. I'm so light-skinned that Latinos sometimes look at me funny if I speak Spanish in front of them (and I only do that if they've been speaking Spanish to each other), but I'm *just* "non-Anglo" enough in appearance that I sometimes get funny looks from Anglos (paticularly when I find myself in East Texas ).

A funny story: I was working on a grad film years ago out near Kerrville.
All of the other guys working on the film happened to be white guys, and at some point one of them started making anti-Mexican racial slurs (Ya know, us lazy, incompetent bastards, etc.). I just cocked an eyebrow at him, laughed, and said, "Oh, then you better start worrying, man. You've got a Mexican working as your cameraman. Better check those dailies and make sure I didn't fuck anything up!" It's funny, but that guy didn't feel like talking to me much after that... .

I meant "over here" as in Phoenix. Cinco De Mayo is the second most important celebration in Mexico as it's a key victory in the war against the invasion ordered by Napoleon (the third, I think) back in the 1800's. But, it's sometimes even more celebrated than the anniversary of the Independence. Go figure. So yeah, you can say it's kind like the 4th of July. Beef, booze and BBQ. That's reason enough to celebrate, don't you think?
