Szycag's Game Boy 8-bit Shmups thread (DONE!)
That last Gradius and the R-Types look like genuine works of art compared to the rest of those. Excellent work. I think you did a better, more thorough job of the blurbs too.
I think that it's kind of neat actually. What better use for that stupid printer. Maybe if it was a better scoring game? (I definitely could have gone for a printer setup with Giga Wing Generations)So apparently this is supposed to win me over because you can print out your scores with the Game Boy Printer. Nice try but no deal.

I'll throw my two cents and say that GB shooting requires basic graphics, that's why I've come to appreciate Nemesis more than its eye-candy, cinematic sequel.
My Top five out of these 37 would therefore look sorta like this:
1.Dropzone GBC
2.Solarstriker
3.Nemesis
4.Twinbee Da!
5.Mercenary Force (special novelty prize)
Sagaia and Nemesis II wouldn't be very far from these, of course.
I also don't like that much the B.I.T.S. rendition of the R-Types, despite that package being for sure one of their standouts.
Anyway, again compliments to szycag for a very cool thread!

Hmmm...good list. I would have put Interstellar Assault at the top, though. I own R-Type DX & there are parts that weren't translated well, making them more frustrating than they have to be. I think that since Interstellar Assault was written specifically for the GB platform, it overcomes these types of issues (& has more forgiving hitbox & collision detection). Anyway, good work & congrats on finishing!
Many thanks to szycag for this entertaining thread!! Well done!
A few words regarding Magical Chase GB: It's fantastic. When played on the real hardware, there is as good as no slowdown (just another reminder that you shouldn't judge games by how they play on emulators). From a technical standpoint it's the best GB/GBC shooter, too bad it doesn't include a setting for harder gameplay (only "easy" and "normal", both of which aren't very difficult).
Magical Chase GB is also extremely rare; I think it took me almost two years to get a complete one (good thing that hardly anyone knows about it). It most likely takes the price for hardest to find portable shooter; forget about GG Aleste and Judgement Silversword.

Wicked to see this - glad it's been bumped as it's really useful. As a few have noticed I'm on a bit of a GB shmups mission at the moment.szycag wrote:With some of you playing Game Boy shmups currently, I thought this thread might warrant a second look. I was kind of in a hurry to finish it a year ago, so if you think there's more to be said then go ahead and post it.
I've sorted some new hi-score threads for Nemesis and Interstellar Assault/Gradius II, plus Solar Striker if you fancy getting involved...
And I'll be adding more I hope...
