I'll keep my eyes open for Coryoon, thanks. I couldn't find a copy, but Magical Chase and Nexzr are going to eat up all my money for a while anyway.

I have a second copy of Nexzr I might be willing to part with. PM me if interested.

I can't recommend the two following games enough:

Winds of Thunder (SCD) and Soldier Blade (HuCard)

True masterpieces! in particular Winds is just so, so, so f*cking good!
Buy these two as your first two games and you won't be disappointed, in fact I envy you experiencing them for the first time.

thinking about it I've got quite a few PC-Engine doubles will have to get a list up....

I am very interested to try Coryoon.

Also I wait for the day to play Sylphia. My interest peeks when I find out that Compile is have their hands in this game!

I highly recommend Magical Chase (but then who am I  ) see my avatar  - it is a fine game but yes it is a bit on the easy side as I am able to 1cc it. The music is great, control is tight and graphics are smooth and seamless!

Magical Chase is quite simply the best HuCard out there. The technical side is taken to the max, but it's also a great fun game!

Coryoon is okay, but a little too childish for my taste. Graphics and sound are not that special either. Worth it if you really like cute 'em ups, but if not you're not missing too much. I'd say gameplay is about on par with PC Denjin/Zonk.

BTW, the US version of Magical Chase has some redrawn sprites, with greater detail and depth, and some new backgrounds, than manage to even improve on the already excellent Japanese version. It was the last US HuCard to be released though, and is extremely rare. A complete copy will run you abou $500!

Damn, I thought $130 for a hu-card (the Jap version) was a bit crazy!

I think Magical Chase first got on my radar thanks to one of your earlier posts, CIT. If Ceph, CIT, and Rob agree, then I'm sure to like it.

This makes me wish they released Magical Chase on Virtual Console. They just have to get it out there.

And here's a website which might have info about the doodads in Magical Chase (weapons and items, persumably). If anyone can translate it...

personally there would be many other games I'd get before Magical Chase, the graphics are some of the best on the HuCard bright and colourful with smooth parallax scrolling, only thing is its ridiculously too easy, yeh the game play while it lasts is good but over far, far too quickly and your left thinking is that it??

its a pretty good this game, in the uk for alot of the nineties it was considered the rarest Hu-Card game (except for the special edition titles and the crap Darius Alpha), I didn't manage to track down a copy till around 95 and by then a lot of Hype had built up around it (often by alot of people who hadn't actually played it lol), so when I finally played it I was little disappointed because everyone was saying "its got the best graphics on the HuCard", well it doesn't, in terms of gameplay yeh it beats other cutesy shooters like magical chase.

if it turns up on ebay it seems to sell for around £40 which is around $80.

Coryoon is by Naxat, and for some reason most of their PCE games are very rare (with the exception of Psycho Chaser and their sports games, of which apparently a heap load was made). I'd say that Coryoon is harder to find than Magical Chase.

PC Denjin. Why they didn't make an arcade ver. of this is beyond me. Remember when gaming co.'s would put "Arcade Style Gameplay!" to hook you into buying that NES game? This card actually holds up to that claim. Truely a defining game for the PCE in uniqueness and hands down fun/exciting gameplay. Get ready to shoot milk missles out your cyber-boobs (you have to play it to believe) :D

For undamned,

Your spot-on colorful commentary regarding the classic TTI Air Zonk/PC Denjin Hu-Card release made me lmao! ^_~

Yep, those 'milky' missles are one-of-a-kind in the wild 'n' wacky genre of shmups..... ^_~
However, the sequel of the Super CD-Rom2 iteration of 'Super Air Zonk' couldn't match up in terms of gameplay/variety of it's earlier Hu-Card iteration...how could Red/NEC/Hudson Soft screw up 'big time' for their second outing of the Air Zonk franchise? The only saving grace would be to release PC Denjin 3/Air Zonk 3..... ^_~

'Cause the first Air Zonk was made by the Coryoon team and used that engine, while the second game was made by some other team (presumably this time at Hudson) :-)

How's about a round of Super Raiden and Gradius 2 for the CD side of the PC Engine, both are quite nice and add stages and other little goodies (mainly Gradius 2 with it's extra stage and bonus rockin' intro).

Also I second the Rainbow Islands CD recommendation, goodness what a great port. :D

No one has recommended the PC-E conversion of Gradius II? Edit: Oh, someone has.

Sapphire would be your best bet, but you need the Arcade HuCard...

yeh its an awesome game! but to buy an official copy is a bit adventurous as a first game as its by far the most expensive (common) game for the system. And as you said on top of that you would need to get an Arcade Card to play it.

Do you need an Arcade Card even with a Duo-R? I can't remember the answer to this.

You do. Duo only has the System Card 3.0 built in.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Why is Sylphia so coveted anyway? Long and boring, bosses are a joke, graphics are average, sound is...okay. Not awful by any means but it feels like your average $10 shooter. IMO, Spriggan did the formula much better years earlier.

At least for Sapphire, you get really well done visuals.

Quoted for truth.

If i wasn't on such a Raiden kick right now i'd finish trying to 1cc Gate. Winds of Thunder kicks my ass so badly in later stages though i'm frightened to attempt ^__^
