Darius Gaiden scans (Tips 'n Tricks)
Here are some scans from a really old (1996) copy of Tips 'n Tricks that features a short description of all the levels, bosses, and weapons.
BEWARE, THESE SCANS ARE HUGE!

I didn't figure that this should go in the strategy section, but if anyone wants to host them permanently somewhere else that would be great.

It has minimal slowdown. Using the black hole bomb with lots of enemies on screen would probably cause slowdown, but you shouldn't be using those anyway.

I heard the arcade and Saturn versions have far less slowdown than the PSX one. The PS2 version of Darius Gaiden also has slowdown. Any chance it could actually be the same slowdown as the PSX version? I noticed a ton of slowdown in the PS2 version in Zone E and during the boss fight with Neon Light Illusion.szycag wrote:The Saturn version has "not the slightest hint of slowdown"? Cuz the playstation one certainly does

I'm now posting this to where it belongs.. sorry
Am I imagining things, or is the japanese Taito memories version of Darius gaiden 20% faster than other versions? I had pretty hard time surviving through levels which I thought I knew well..
Versions I have played are PCB, mame, taito legends (with 60hz option on) and taito memories.

That's the first time I heard this (though it was painful googling and the MAME sites I looked up didn't have the info I expected). From what I heard, edit: the JP Memories Darius Gaiden may also have slowdown like the US and EU versions. Some posts I read suggest that the some games in the US Taito Legends 2 may run faster than the EU versions, but I'm not 100% sure on this.MJR wrote:I'm now posting this to where it belongs.. sorry

Here is where I heard about the slowdown in the JP Memories. It doesn't mention Darius Gaiden, though. Edit: It only mentions Elevator Action Returns. I thought it was talking about Darius Gaiden too, but it doesn't seem so.

Thanks for the link
I'm pretty glad that I sold my taito legends packs away and bought all taito memories packs instead. Though darius gaiden feels little bit more hectic in the japanese version, it's by no means unplayable.
I've also read speculation from this forum that even though PAL taito legends 2 offers you 60hz option, it still runs in 50hz. Sounds way bizarre to me, but it could explain lot of things.
Well, no more money from me to the Explosiv. What a bunch of ripoffs.
I'm so glad I modded my ps2

I'm glad I got the US Taito Legends 2. While the JP Memories has none of the input glitches, I heard the slowdown is still there. I rather get the Saturn versions to double dip on the flawed games and I know for sure the ports in the collection, G-Darius and Raystorm, are the same.MJR wrote:Thanks for the link![]()

I would like some clarification on Darius Gaiden. You compared to the PCB? NTSC TV? Did you try Zone E or Neon Light Illusion? One poster here compared Darius Gaiden to the JP one and said it had the same slowdown as Taito Legends 2. Different revs? Maybe it's different on different model PS2s? Do you have the original or the "Eternal Hits" re-release?
I'm not sure of the 50Hz thing. One poster here played the EU Taito Legends 2 on a NTSC TV in 60Hz mode. I don't know why the games would run at the same speed in both modes, though.
I don't know if Explosiv is the blame. They supposedly handed the PS2 Taito Legends 2 to Taito who supposedly ported over code from Taito Memories for the games (the PC and Xbox TL2 from Explosiv lack the input glitches and slowdown of the PS2 version). The current Taito of Japan has been known to publish some slipshod games or hand projects over to poor developers from time to time too. I heard the Ys remakes they published aren't so hot.

I compared to mame, EU version of taito legends 2, and my memories of the PCB (which may be bit off). I played the EU version last time two months ago, so of course I can be mistaken.BrianC wrote:

I bought the 'eternal hits' re-release.
But, this is a minor thing. The main reason for me to buy japanese version is that in the japanese compilation I am able to map 'insert coin' to the 3rd button, as I've wired my ps2 to an arcade cabinet that has three button layout.
in european/american versions, the credit button remapping is disabled. I guess they think that western players are so dumb that they don't know what 'insert coin' means. Bah. and btw, I did try reconnecting the psx pad to the cabinet for inserting coin. Not to mention that after doing it, the ps2 wouldn't accept digital controls from the cab unless I rebooted. Bah!

The credit mapping thing isn't a major issue for me. Pressing select for credits and L1 to start works fine. The collection wasn't designed for arcade cabs.

"Avoid the laser"
"You should bomb"
Golly-gee, why didn't I think of that!?
interesting find though. Besides the Batrider scans on boss pattern order, I've never seen anything truly useful come out of a mag covering shooting games
