Cave's annual report

Post by EOJ »

Cave released their annual report on 7/13/2007, for the fiscal year ending at 5/2007:

http://www.cave.co.jp/ir/archives/ir/pd ... 071301.pdf

In it, they layout plans through 5/2008. No mention is made of any more ports, unfortunately. All they mention in regards to consumer games is continuing stuff like their "Imagine" online game crap.

Their production costs were down this past year compared to 2006, partly because they didn't do any ports. At the same time, their profits were as high as ever. So, lower production costs + high profit = no more ports. :( Unfortunately, from a business point of view, you can't really blame them. They're making the most profitable decision.

I guess this means that the ports they did do weren't profitable enough to justify any further ones afterwards...suppose that should have already been evident after the "Best" version of Ibara was canned. Well, no use crying over spilled milk, I suppose...

Yeah, the plus side is that cave are doing ok and won't go bust soon.

Shame about the ports though.

Right, they're a company that wants to grow in the future, and continue to be able to pay their employees.

I think he was referring to the CAVE="Computer Art Visual Entertainment" acronym (page 31 of the report), rather than "what they stand for morally".

I always thought the word "Cave" was largely meaningless and not an acronym. So there you go.

And yes, shame about the lack of ports. It looks like those of us not lucky enough to live in countries where arcades are still popular will simply miss out.

Oh, that makes sense. But I thought that was common knowledge? I've known that for awhile.

So is this a report to shareholders or is it a privately owned company?

It's for the shareholders.

By the way, has anyone else noticed the stuff Cave has been adding to their website? There is a cool recruitment page up:

http://www.cave.co.jp/recruiting/post05/index.html

If you click on the little Ikeda-San thing at the bottom, it opens a video showing Ikeda at work (and playing some MMP on his Egret 3 in the office!), followed by his discussion about what his work is like, and some other stuff. Really cool. He was recently promoted to Head of Game Development, so he's the boss of that division.

BTW, notice the picture on that page is of the Espgaluda 2 stage 2 boss fight, but at the bottom right of the screen just above the barrier bar you can see some text which says "Stage 2" (if you zoom in on the pic enough). A debug/test version of the PCB? The move strip in the cab in that pic is from Mushi Futari, by the way.

Yes, I'm a Cave nerd.

Drooling over those shots of the inhouse game development tools! Would love to work on just the level designs and not the assembler code behind it.

Yeah, that is pretty cool. I don't know what the heck that game is though. Looks sorta like Mushi, but the enemies are different. In-game progress on Death Lolita? If so, it's definitely a vert.

Its the start of stage 3 in Futari. Those are probably just icons to represent enemy placements and paths.

Yeah, it looked like a Mushi background. I was just thrown off by the place-holder enemies.

I would love to work on the assembler code :D

Anyone have an idea of what kind of development platform they
are using ? I don't see any Windows telltale signs ?

You are correct, I downloaded the flv file to get a higher resolution and
I can see the title bars a lot clearer now.

Yep, I was hoping that they used some flavour of Linux for the map stuff.
