Kingdom Grandprix
Ayanami - 724,481 - Chitta - 2-2
Finally got the 1 loop clear! Happy days are here again!
Route
Start - Valmatic Ocean - Outcast Castle - Deeply Dungeon - Forest of Dead - Kobald's Tower
Why do people pick Strato Storm instead of Forest of Dead? Is it easier to race in? Or do they not want to deal with it on the 2nd Loop? My guess is to avoid it on loop 2...

Good work. Way to avoid Miyamoto.Ayanami wrote:Ayanami - 724,481 - Chitta - 2-2
I've been playing Bul-Gin per AWJ's suggestion. I've managed to clear the first loop, but not with a higher score than my Bornnam clear (and I still haven't got the hang of racing). He's pretty cool. Sometimes his slowness is frustrating but his main shot and his H shot are pretty devastating.
Shooting Mode (Saturn Ver.)
937,120 - Icarus - Stage 2-5 - Nirvana
Stage route:
Start > Air Circus > Outcast Castle > Cold Corridor > Strato Storm > Kobolds Tower >
2-Start > Velmatic Ocean > Cross Fire > Deeply Dungeon > Forest of Dead (Owned >_<#)
Not going to bother relearning the racing game just yet.
Killed by the Forest of Dead midboss. Bah.
Something to unwind with inbetween Batsugun and Mahou Daisakusen.

Bul-Gin is faster than Bornnam, so I don't know what you're complaining aboutAndi wrote:I've been playing Bul-Gin per AWJ's suggestion. One thing about Bul-Gin is that his hitbox is significantly bigger than the other characters (who are all about the same size as each other--Nirvana may be a little smaller but it's hard to be sure). I've never managed to pass through the left side of the saw trap in Outcast Castle with him without using a bomb. His size is actually an advantage when grabbing coins and bumping the other racers down, though.
Incidentally, here are the characters in order from fastest to slowest:
Nirvana
Miyamoto
Kickle&Laycle
Gain
Honest John
Chitta
Bul-Gin
Bornnam
Note that the old characters are in the same order as in the first game, and the new characters slot neatly between them.
Racing tip: You don't have to stay in the top half of the screen all the time to retain your speed. You don't automatically slow down when below the midpoint of the screen; you just don't regain speed lost from collisions or dying. Hugging the bottom edge of the screen will rapidly slow you down, however.
I probably would like it better too. But I think the racing gimmick in KGP is pretty interesting. Plus, I don't think the prequel got a Saturn port (and I don't really MAME).CIT wrote:Yes, I wanna reach the second loop, and I would've, if I hadn't died with a full bomb stock on the final boss, as I already had enough racing points. Should've just emptied all bombs on him, dammit.
I have to say, I much prefer the prequel over this though...
Okay, finally won the GP!
CIT - 717,852 - Miyamoto - 2-2

Time to move on to Great Mahou Daisakusen, I suppose.
Shippuu Mahou is overall easier, but strangely it was more frustrating for me, since I think the racing aspect is so random. Sometimes you're constantly in the lead, while at other times there will be some favorite who's always blowing past you (usually Chitta or Bornnam). It's also a shame the characters aren't balanced so well. As it is there's not much point using anybody but Miyamoto.
The game does have great graphics and sound though!

Yeah, the prequel was only ported to two Japanese computers, X68k and FM Towns, and the PCB is kinda rare, so it's not an easy game to come by if you don't emulate.Andi wrote:I probably would like it better too. Hey, another Chi-town fellow. Are you in the city of the suburbs?drboom wrote:drboom - 523,571 - Miyamoto - 1-6
I just got the pcb yesterday and played most of the morning. This is a hella fun game. I'm looking forward to the second loop.
(hey - my first high score for the high score tables!)
Good score for only 1 day of playing. Keep at it.
In the city. On the Northside, Belmont and Clark area. Good to see another Chicagoan on the forums as well!
I've been playing most of the morning and I cannot finish the first loop. I have made it to the end of Kobold's Tower about five or six times and keep getting smoked by the blue lazer thing. I see it comming, but don't move quick enough. Last time I got there and died and just to see how close I got, I continued and it took about 3 shots to finish the boss off.
Damn.

Yeah 2nd loop is punishing, and you are playing all the levels you never practice and are lousy at. Nice score in any case though. And good job using Gain, we don't see much of him around here.Gwyrgyn Blood wrote:

I made it to the second loop after a week or so... it's not too hard to do. Now the second loop is a major pain in the ass.
Re: Kingdom Grandprix
I'll bump this with a score from last summer. This lovely game needs more attention.
Racing:
Voxbox - 978.451 - 2-5 - Miyamoto

Re: Kingdom Grandprix
Good score Vox. It's interesting that no one has cleared the 2nd loop yet. For such an easy 1st loop, the 2nd loop is borderline absurd.
Re: Kingdom Grandprix
Thanks! Yeah, I remember the 2nd loop being so fast paced and chaotic that I just rode on my luck, bombs and extends. Never tried to actually learn it.
I only ever learned to beat one of the final stages, so I would have been screwed anyhow if I got past 2-5
Definitly gonna pick up this game again sometime.
