if you can get it for cheap and you like raiden, its a fun diversion, but i never really thought too much of it myself.

i though it had boring levels, weapons, and bosses, but i got it new for $10 or something so its all good.

i heard they did a ps2 remake, but dont know much about it.

lots of fun. theres actually been more than a bit of discussion on this game elsewhere on the forums. use the search tool to find any mentions of it in the main shmup forum.

very similar to raiden, not sure how to describe it but it doesn't seem as clean as the raidens. weapons are kind of unfocused (again more debate as to the best, although no one seems to like lightning)

cheapest option (assuming you have the equipment) is gekioh: the shooting king on ps1 (released in us and jp, but with no tate. has some fun side modes though) or double shienryu on ps2 (simple 2000 series from d3) gets you shienryu and shienryu explosion (otherwise cancelled sequel) tate is an option but fun asides are cut.

there is also a saturn version (jp only) but it still seems to fetching better than $30.

i got my gekioh (later sold it on this board) for around $7-$10. my double shienryu cost me around $15 plus shipping on Play-asia.com

fun game and if you have the equipment it is definitely worth it.
I have no sig whatsoever.

It's not quite like Raiden.

Basically Bullet Magnet hit the nail on the head though. Excellent game, but just falls a little short of being a classic.

everything ahar said and:

-last boss is ultracheap
-love the cock rock soundtrack

it does absolutely nothing to further the genre and in that regard is average, but like gekirindan, I still like it a good deal.

yeah, definitely worth it, because whatever version you buy will be cheap.

It has a really annoying noise for the regular bullet spread weapon. I still own it to, it's avg but solid.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Shienryu=Daioh=Shienryu.
Seriously, can you say 'snore', cause I sure can. I have nothing against this game and it's predecessor other than they don't strike me as too interesting. Give me Dogyuun over these games.

I am probably biased as Shienryu was the first shmup that I tated my tv with. It blew my mind. I can't say anything bad about Shienryu. It is no Battle Garegga, but very solid. Some sprites are a bit quirky like the first boss, but it's a fun game and from relatively unknown developer it isn't bad at all. Very Raiden like indeed which is not a bad thing. If I would own an ST-V system, this cart would be on top of my list.

I have always had an interest in this game for the Saturn, but have never had the chance to find it anywhere. Any ideas on what the price would be or anyone have this?

Back in the day I had the opportunity to play it in an ST-V cab and it was very good. Damn, I wish ST-V cabs were still common :(

Really? I didn't really like the lightning gun just because it made me feel cheap but it seems so overpowered compared to the other weapons that I usualy end up using it anyway.

As the cap'n (not me ;)) said, it's usually somewhere in the 30-dollar range.

I dig Shienryu. A lot. It plays like Raiden, but it has more bullets and action than Raiden 2. Pretty much like everyone said, it doesn't advanve the genre anywhere, but it's very solid, well designed, and you can't go wrong with it. $30 for the Saturn version is very worthy for the game.

It's a pretty decent game, but that's the most I'll say about it.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

I love it! My favorite Raiden-esque shmup! :D I would like to pick up Geki-Oh Shooting King: Shienryu for my PS2, as I've heard that it doens't have any slowdown issues, other then in multiplayer.

But really, the best port of this is on the Saturn; pick it up there if you can.

While I cannot speak from personal experience about the Saturn version, I can tell you that the NTSC-J PS2 version found on "Simple 2000 Series Vol.37: The Shooting" is wonderful! While a number of people find this game to be similar to Raiden (and it is), there is enough substance to the title to give it a unique feel. After playing Gekioh on the PS1, which is a decent port, the PS2 version is more arcade authentic. I still find myself popping this game in when Mushi, Espgaluda, and DDPDOJ get old.

The advantage to the version found on "The Shooting" is that it is packaged with Shienryu: Explosion--an inferior shooter on its own merit, but nevertheless a interesting distraction.

You should be able to pick up this title on the PS2 for less than $30. I picked mine up from a fellow Shmups poster for $20.

Shienryu is ok. It's not on my top 10 list. I think there is a PS1 version available too (1980 yen).

I have gekioh shooting king and only like it because it reminds me of the STV experience, which just flat out rules I think.

I really really like the game. My only criticism would be that the first level seems kind of throw away. Besides that I think it's very refined in lots of ways,
Pros:
I like the weapons system.
Send back on levels but not on bosses= EXCELLENT. I wish more games did that. I think it's successful whether playing for score or fun.
The little details- roaring bosses, plane boss dipping into the clouds (on STV).
Classicality- boat level, cliff level, space level, asteroid level, star destroyer level, DIFFERENT color of space level, etc.
Color pallette- great soft tones
Music- rules
Gameplay- solid, fun, sniper style twitchy old school
Pacing- Cross between raiden and truxton, I love it

Cons:
slow difficulty curve- the later levels are just fantastic.
pretty repetitive bullet patterns
It's really quite a bit more fun on an arcade machine I think.
get sent back on the last boss all of a sudden? What's the deal?

I don't think it adds anything to the genre except it's own bad-ass self as a wonderfull example of a modern-looking old-school feeling shmup. I think it has a lot of style.

i like the octopus boss as well, even though he is a pussy. all those arms waving around all the time, looks very threatening.

It is a cool game. I enjoy it a lot. It is nothing simply amazing though compared to some of the other stuff that is out there.

I have the American ps1 release. For 9.00 It's one of the best buys you can make if you live in the US. It's fun. I feel that I have gotten my money's worth three times over. I realize that some of the weapons are poorly designed but you can just keep the ones you like. The sprites are overall well done and do look nice. Nothing to write home about, but overall well done. Really that is the theme of the entire game.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

if memory serves me right, the PS2 version did not have a button config option, so, if like me, you have a PS2 Saturn Pad or nice Joystick, you'll be stuck with the shitty default button config

besides that, I've spent enough time playing the Saturn version to say that the game is capable of boring you to death

really not worth it, but since it is pretty cheap (30 at most as someone mentioned), it might be a good short term diversion.

Pros:
  • - It's a fun game.
    - It has nice graphics for 2D, 32-bit
    - It has good music
    - The weapons don't completely suck
Cons:
  • - It is essentially a beefed up Raiden-alike
    - The weapon system doesn't allow for switching, like Daioh, the game it was based upon
    - It can get frustrating & tedious at times (though that could be said of any shmup)
I have the US Gekioh: Shooting King PSX release & rather enjoy the game.

The main problem is that it looks too good for its gameplay, so people expect Dodonpachi or something more modern.

I like it. Pretty chaotic and a bit random as far as certain items go. I have the PS2 rev and ST-V, but sometimes my ST-V version freezes after the second boss :(

Fun game for the price, every version is cheap to buy, even the ST-V cart.
