recommend a RGB monitor..

I have decided to get a RGB monitor for PCBs/Tate'ing

I didn't have room but now I'm gonna convert a closet into a in wall entertainment system. I was thinking a amiga monitor.... what do you guys have to say about it?

The Amiga monitor is decent but quite old (1990) and extremely (and unnecessarily) heavy due to the excessive metal casing used inside it. I would recommend the Sony PVM-2950q the most followed by the PVM-2530. I hear the Mitsubishi Megaview monitors are good too but have yet to see one in action. If having an enclosed monitor is not your only option I recommend a Wells Gardner k7000 for the finest picture. However, the reigning king of all monitors I have ever seen are the nanaos...but good luck finding a set for those cheap

Yeah, Sony PVM series is probably what you should be aiming for. Sony KX series is good too, it's basically their version of the Amiga monitor.

Amiga monitors are great, especially the ones by Philips, only drawback is they're just small.

NEC and Barco are other makers to look out for.

A lot of film & video production companies are clearing out old equipment atm, since their all upgrading to HD, so you can find some of this stuff for a good deal. Might wanna check the yellowpages and phone around. I got a 29" Barco monitor for about $100 from a company like that, and it's great, just like a real arcade monitor.

How much do those Sony PVMs weigh? This eBay auction suggests it's 120lbs, which is pretty crazy.

There seems to be a lot for sale but they all require pickup, which makes it pretty hard to find one.

Edit: Seems 120lbs is pretty accurate for the PVM-2950 ... shipping even a small distance is on the order of 250$.

Probably too big and heavy for what I want.

I have a Philips CM 8533 (an old amiga monitor) in perma-tate myself. It's quite awesome.

I have two PVMs--can't recall the numbers right now as I'm at work--a 14" and a 19". Both are excellent quality! Both of them are ones that were marketed towards the medical community. The 19" is about 80lbs. I believe I won the auction for about $55 and paid another $85 to have it shipped from Utah to New York. I can post the model numbers later if you'd like...

+1 vote for a PVM, I've got 2 of em I found locally via craigslist.

Great chassis for tate, they look good even with the minor geometry / color issues on old crts.

Sony PVM-1910 is a great 19" RGB monitor, I recommend it.

The Amiga monitors are about 13", I think it may be a bit too small unless it's a small on-desk setup. They are really nice though with the picture quality, the one I have is the Amiga 1080.

What's the deal with RGB monitors that makes them so heavy anyway? My older 19" CRT monitor for PC is pretty huge but I'm fairly sure it's not any 80lbs.

I'm trying to find a decent display for my setup right now, as I don't really want to occupy our primary TV (which is on the older side and doesn't even have S-Video).

Right now I'm passing my PS2 through my capture card, which is okay, but not ideal really. I'm probably going to want something different for my supergun.

yeah i want at least 19 inches..... those sony ones look like what i need. and these will deffinately work with SPI/Raiden fighter PCBs?

What exactly does RGB input look like anyway? I checked the specs and did only seems to have S-video, 25pin and a EIAJ-1 VCR connector listed.

ok, I'm sold on PVM series....

What are the differences besides the size in the models? The inputs are varying I assume? I want to be sure that these will work with any PCB I throw at it via a supergun and RGB. I am guessing they handle anything 480i and below or can they handle higher than 480i? Like 480p ect.... I know that may be a stupid question but I thought I'd ask to be sure.

The fact my XRGB2+ won't handle raiden fighters is why I am making this purchase.... well a strong motivator. I also need something I can tate to of coarse.

I just got the supergun and Raiden Fighters cart only. I plan on picking up raiden fighters 2, jet and viper phase 1 so I'll wind up with a SPI board at some point and the RF cart was only 60.00 so I snagged it. I didn't realize that the newer seibu PCBs had that odd 54hz deal. I just thought it was the older boards like raiden 1 and 2 ect.

PVM is 240p/480i, PGM is 480p.

found a pvm monitor on craig's list for free. 21 inch and it was only 15 min from the house.

it's a euro monitor, I'll have to get a power converter but that scart socket is handy.

That's great! You're real lucky. Euro monitor also means you can get a Scart cable for most of your consoles and won't need to worry about making custom cables.

The 2030 takes rgb input on the DB-25; if you find one and need a cable made, i can help you out.
