Otakon Shmupmeet?

Post by Balzac »

Lets show some shooting love amidst a sea of Halo and fighting game setups.

I've also heard there will be a shmup panel on Saturday evening.

So is anyone going?
Good luck or cry.

I will most likely be going, although I have not worked out any of the details yet. Where are you staying?

I'm crashing an internet buddy's room at the Tremont Plaza.

Also, it seems there will be not just one, but two shmup panels.
Good luck or cry.

I'm leaning toward "yes" -- still not 100% though.

I've heard they are having more strict rules about what hardware you can bring in to the game room this year. I don't know how much truth there is to that though, but I doubt there would be any Tate going on anyway unless someone brought all their own equipment (including display).

I'll be there regardless but I'm unfortunately not planning on bringing ESPG2 for a number of reasons. :I

There was tate, but no ESPGaluda. On that note, Ikaruga, Under Defeat, and Trigger Hearts Excellia were played tate, while Einhander, R-Type, Senko o Ronde and the usual hori-fare were all yoko-normal.

Sadly, the Radiant Silvergun game that was suppose to debut was taken out of commision due to technical difficulties with the Saturn.

Trigger Hearts must have been the one random shooter I didn't recognize. I played Under Defeat for the first time anyway... it was fun for a few plays but didn't really grab me too much.

As for the rules, they basically said no arcade hardware from regular people. The only 2 supergun setups were brought by staff. Hence the lack of us having Karnov's Revenge or TRF2. :/

It was an alright Otakon anyway, but no arcade hardware really sucks. I mostly stuck to GG in the game room this year.

All that was really there was Twinkle Star Sprites, Under Defeat, Rez, Einhander, Ikaruga and Senko no Ronde.

Otakon as a whole has just really gone downhill. It wasn't as fun as it has been previous years and I don't know if I'll be going next year.

If I end up going to AnimeUSA, I'll probably bring ESPG2 with me. That convention isn't really great, BUT the gameroom people are usually pretty cool about bringing in stuff.

I'm looking to go to another convention in the MD/VA area, can anyone recommend one?

AnimeUSA is in NoVA right around Tyson's Corner. It's not great but I usually have a good time since these is plenty of room for PC setups, and you can usually get stuff you want to play setup if you talk to the right people. Probably better for fighting games though.

Katsukon is also in MD but I have no idea about the quality of the game room there. It's supposed to be a very good anime convention though.

There really isn't any shmup heavy convention that I know of around here.

It was thinking that it'd probably be pretty easy to set up a shmup panel at one of the conventions if we wanted to. If you work at a panel you also get free admission. We could also decide to bring more shmups to these conventions, I have an extra dreamcast sitting around.

I'll look up info on Katsukon...

AnimeUSA isn't supposed to be that great, my friend did a panel there last year.
