Something I wanted to share

Post by Shatterhand »

I work close to where my girlfriend works (just a couple of blocks), and as we get out of work at the same time, many times I go pick up her there so we can stay some time together.

On the way between my work and hers, there's an arcade, where I sometimes go play in lunch time, or when she has to make overdue hours.

Most of the time I'd play just Street Fighter 3, Sonic Wings 2 (their only shmup) and Street Fighter 2 CE.

Last month they went for a big revamp, they changed a lot of games. Now they have no more shmups, and FOUR differnet Virtua Strikers games. Besides Virtua Striker, they have San Francisco Rusn, Cruisi'n World and EVERY OTHER game is a versus brawler, if lots of different The King of Fighters... and no more Street Fighter 3 :( . Of course, they added KoF XI and Capcom vs SNK, so I had new interesting games to play.

Yesterday I was going to pick up her, and I wasn't going to get in the arcade ,as she was already waiting for me... but when I was passing on front of it, I looked inside... and I saw , really squished between two random figthing games, a tated screen.

I found this funny, I looked inside it for like one second, and I quickly noticed the tated screed. So I stopped, and entered the arcade to check out what game it was.

Macross Plus.

I didn't played it, but surely will give it a got next time I have to keep on waiting my GF :)

I wish my arcade had a shmup. All we have that is good is Marvel vs. Capcom 1 and 2, and Tekken 5. And 5 different SVC chaos games, but I would hardly call those good.

I wish one of the 12 places in my city that have arcade games had a shmup.

I know of two arcade places. One has Raiden 2 (two cabinets actually), Raiden Fighters, Blazing Star (or at least it had), and Galaga. The other one has Raiden Fighters Jet. I feel somewhat lucky after reading your posts. :)

Macross Plus isn't a bad game, but it's really simple (and pretty unbalanced) in comparison to the first Macross game.

Damn... I really hate the fact that KOF is so popular around here...

Which version of Street Fighter 3? 3rd strike? I used to play it in taquara

I live in RJ too

I never see a tated arcade on my life. Here in Brazil, shoot'em ups aren't very famous, about 95% of the people only plays fighting games (specially KoF series), racer or soccer games on the arcades.

Nope, it was 2nd Impact. Still nice anyway.

What the heck, when did Brazilians invaded the forum? :) In what area do you live, Leandro? (Weird to talk with a brazilian in english, heh:D) . IF you used yo play SF3TS in Taquara, I imagine you live around Jacarepagua, right? :) I live in Bonsucesso.

And yeah, I can't stand all that KoF loving either. I don't hate the series or anything, but I think we overrate it too much. I am enjoying XI lately, but still I'd rather play something more, erm, better? :)

But I disagree Maxi ... from what city are you from? Here in Rio, except maybe the Norte Shopping arcade, I think *EVERY* arcade I know have at least one shmup (Even if it's just Sonic Wings 2, as this gotta be the MOST popular shmup around here ever) . In the Nova America Arcade, they have a Strikers 1945 Plus with some SICK scores on it. I believe there's even a 2-all score there.

I even know a place nearby that have just 2 machines: Sonic Wings 2 and Sengoku Ace ! I mean, the guy has just 2 games, and BOTH ARE SHMUPS!

here, in bogotá, i get to see some old shmups like Raiden Fighters, Aero Fighters 2 or Strikers 1945 III... problem is that i have to make a trip of at least 45 mins to get to one of those arcades... and i find it a lil bothersome.... but i put some coins in them from time to time.

but what really bothers me, is that i've NEVER seen any of the newer ones... i'd like to play IBARA or KETSUI in one of those arcades, but since i figure that it wont happen im thinkin on gettin a modded PS2 and import the ports of those.

There's an arcade near here, that ACTUALLY DOESNT SUCK, if you can believe that.

The guy that runs it actually knows what he's doing!!!

There's a whole half of the arcade that's all free-play; the other games cost nickels instead of quarters.

Now, inside the free-play section, is one of my favorite shmup games PERIOD, and that'd be Giga Wing. I can just stand there for hours doing that.....

Theres a few others as well but suddenly I cant remember what they are.

And they're all free-play :)

Aero Fighters 2 is the only shooter you ever see in American arcades.

Oh, we're playing this game, are we?

Let's just conclude that we all wish that shmups weren't on life support in every country except Japan.

Indeed. I'm sure there must be an arcade somewhere in Green Bay, but I don't know where to look. I know that the last city I lived in had one fullscale arcade (Raiden, Raiden II, Raiden Fighters Jet, Galaga, and a bunch of the typical crap) in a laundromat of all places, but I didn't find out about it until after I moved here. It would be nice if those places that do have arcade games would advertise that fact.

My university student union arcade had Silvergun in a perfectly fine and operational candy cabinet. I was pretty surprised when I saw it.

The next day they moved it to the other candy cabinet with the fucked up screen and loose-as-your-mom Happ sticks. It made way for Project Justice to be in the nice cab.

After playing more of both, I'm pretty happy with the decision.

The last shmup my arcade had was Galaga. I was pissed when they got rid of that. Bastards.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

One of the Golfland arcades in San Jose used to have all the cool stuff- a Neo Geo 4 slot, 19XX D&D dedicated cab and a few SF. I haven't been there for many years. I wish San Francisco has arcade like that.

There's always the SFSU arcade. They're never without a couple good shmups.

And they always set the difficulty to hard or hardest, and raise the points for extends.

They did that for Strikers 1999, and DDP when it was there. I am pretty sure ESPGaluda too.

If you have an arcade in your area, try to talk to the owners and influence the place.

We get our own PCBs installed in our local London arcade. Over the past 2-3 years we've put Cyvern, Dodon, Ketsui, Strikers 1999, Espgaluda, Fire Shark, Sengeki Striker, A.P.Batrider in.
On top of what is already there; Mush, Progear, RF Jet, Strikers 1945 Plus, RF1, Night Raid and many many Fighter titles.

The newest shmup I've seen in an arcade around here was Gigawing ... I've never seen any Cave stuff, nor Raiden Fighters.

I know a guy who lives in another city who plays in an arcade that, according to him, has a bucketload of shmups, including Ikaruga.

Hey Shatterhand, I once heard that Sonic Wings 2 is not a proper vertical with tate (unlike Sonic Wings, which uses a tate'd monitor). Is that right? (You mention Sonic Wings 2 in your first post.)

That's correct. Both Sonic Wings 2 and 3 do not run on tate screens. Sonic Wings 1 and Sonic Wings Limited are the ones with proper vertical screens.

Thanks, that's what I thought. This series doesn't get the love it deserves, imho.

Del, do you share in any of the profits when doing this? Its an interesting premise, and I wonder if any of the local arcades near me would go for some more shmups. I don't want to become an operator with a route, halling cabs and paying for yearly tax stamps, so this sounds like an easier solution.

Sonic Wings 2 is the shmup I most see here. It's like the arcade operator goes "Well, I guess we need a shoot'em up", and the arcade seller will ALWAYS give him Sonic Wings 2 for some reason.

The tated screen I saw was Macross Plus . That arcade used to have Sonic Wings 2 too (heh), but when they had the huge revamp, they took it out.

And for a brief time, they had no shmups at all. Now they have Macross Plus, which was the tated screen I noticed after a quickly glance at the arcade from outside :)

No absolutely not :) . Firstly I don't need the ca$h, and secondly the ca$h is so small that its not worth bothering about. Remember...shoot'em ups hardly ever get played these days.
In fact I do the opposite and have put £1 coins into cabs containing boards from my own collection. I want this particular arcade to survive. It benefits me (gives me somewhere relaxed to hang out with my mates, plus a solid cab to go for scores) and it benefits the arcade.
