Japanese CD-Rom based PS2 Shmups?

Post by warp_zone »

Hi all,

I got my Swap Magic discs in the mail today and I installed my magic keys and everything was good, or so I thought...

Upon booting the DVD-Rom loader to test it out, the disc was dead, leaving me with just the CD-Rom loader!

So my question to all you JPN PS2 shmuppers is this:

Which Japanese PS2 shmups are CD-Rom based (as opposed to DVD-Rom)?

While I wait for a replacement DVD-Loader, I'd like to get some play time in with what I have! I managed to find some French shmup site that said ESPGaluda was CD-Rom based and luckily enough, that's the game I ordered from Play Asia last week that's currently en route to my home.

Is there anything else out there I could get in the meantime?

PS: I'm mostly interested in the Cave shooters (ESPGaluda is my only PS2 Cave title thus far), but any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I believe ESPGaluda is DVD based.

Regarding CD rom based PS2 JPN shooters, I can think of:
Trizeal
Rez
Psyvaviar 1 & 2
Raiden 3
Gradius 3 & 4
Strikers 1945 Collection

Homura

I would assume Shikigami no Shiro II is CD based since Castle Shikigami 2 is CD based.

(The games with the purple backing are CD based right?)

Thanks for the input so far, guys.
I believe ESPGaluda is DVD based.
Can someone verify for sure if ESPGaluda is CD based or not?
I'd prefer an answer that wasn't faith based. :)

You know this for sure? A look at the box could be deceiving since the US Raiden III says it's a DVD Rom but it definitely isn't.

If it is DVD, this sucks. I hope the place I ordered these discs from doesn't give me a hard time about replacements.

Thanks man.

Galuda is a DVD, as are the other 3 Cave games.

As for a few other games not mentioned yet, XII Stag and Gradius V are both CDs, while Twinkle Star Sprites: LPP is a DVD. I believe that all of the Psikyo Collections are CDs, while the Taito Memories compilations are DVDs...lastly, I think Star Soldier is a CD.

Well shit.

I guess it's gonna be a while before i'm playing any Cave shooters on my PS2. Guess it's back to the Dreamcast for a bit.

Thanks BM!

It should be noted that the Swap Magic discs, all of them, are EXTREMELY prone to breaking down.

The 3.8 version of the DVD loader is the most notorious for this. All 3.8 discs that I've seen, are all quite dead, and not repairable.

If you can, try to get yourself a 3.6 version.

WAY better.

But even those arent perfect.

If you're gonna use imports,

I *highly* suggest going out and getting a resurfacer.

You know, those things with the wheels.... they "buff" the disc and scrape off the top layer of plastic on the data side of the disc to remove scratches and errors.

I have one, absolutely works like a charm. It is, in fact, the ONLY reason I can play ANY of my imports at all, and a few of my non-imports.

If you get one, though, make sure you read the manual!!!!

These things work very, very well..... IF you do it right.

Just remember that each disc can only be resurfaced a certain number of times; go too far and the disc will be destroyed.

Are they really that frail? Mine work great. The DVD one even has a huge fucking scrape along one half of it when my dogs got into my room and grabbed it while it was inside those cheap paper sleeves. It still works fine even though it looks like I scraped it on concrete..

I've had mine (3.6) for about 5 months now with no problems. I keep them in a duplex DVD case, however.

Swap Magic 3.3 works almost perfectly. No real reported incidents of anything; 3.6 on has some compatibility issues with certain consoles while 2.x before has compatibility problems with games.

I think it depends on where the scratch is on the disc......

I use these, and so does my cousin; we've been through like 4 of them, 3 of those dying to a VERY VERY TINY scratch that other discs would shrug off.

I dont get the feeling that these things are made very well.........

Maybe but...

I can almost use the scratch to measure the circumference of the disc. It has quite a few little scratches over the rest of the disc too. My dogs really had into it.
