Shmup music inspiration

Post by FRO »

I'm sure many of us on this forum would agree that the music in many shmups could be considered "inspirational" in some facet. However, I'm wondering what some of the inspirations have been for those composing it. For example, several Zuntata works (their more ambient stuff, anyway) resemble the song "Nucleus" from the Alan Parsons Project 1975 release "I, Robot". Particularly the G-Darius & RayForce/Layer Section soundtracks. However, I don't know if that song (or APP in any way) was an inspiration or not. Does anyone here know if specific shmup music composers have ever mentioned in interviews the inspiration (or perhaps musical template) they had when they wrote a specific piece or game soundtrack?

I'd like to know too, if anyone has any info. So many shmup soundtracks are somewhat fusion-y (e.g. border down) when they aren't being techno or orchestral.

Hmm.. Download 2 on the PCE has music that copies the style of Black Sabbath, and Lords/Winds of Thunder is purely in the style of Yngwie Malmsteen. Sylphia also copies melodies straight out of 80s and 90s dance numbers.
