Konami Krazy Racers = many Parodius references.

Post by EddyMRA »

None of the Parodius games were ever localized into North America. However, Konami Krazy Racers for the GBA is full of Parodius references. That means that many people in America will not get the references.

The Parodius references I've seen so far:
*An enemy blue penguin appears in the menus, with the same animations including his hilarious tripping and flailing animations.
*A chick and rooster enemies also appears on the menus.
*Takosuke is a selectable driver.
*A series of race courses is clearly based on Parodius (Space Colony). Obstacles on the course include the ballerina pandas. Even the music in those courses is from Parodius, being Takosuke's theme.

The Gradius references:
*Moai is a selectable driver. He spits out his trademark rings as a victory animation.
*Vic Viper is an unlockable character.

Castlevania references:
*Dracula is a selectable driver.
*Magma Castle has many Castlevania references. It is similar to the Bowser Castle courses in the Mario Kart series. The music played in Magma Castle courses is an arrangement of "Beginning" from Castlevania III.

Other Konami references:
*Cyber Field is based on the Metal Gear games. The music played is from Metal Gear Solid.
*Ice Paradise is a series of courses based on an old Konami game called Antarctic Adventure (where Pentarou came from). The music is also from Antarctic Adventure, which itself is a remix of "The Skaters' Waltz" by Emil Waldteufel.
*Pop 'n Twinbee: Pastel is a selectable driver.
The age of Alluro and JudgeSpear is over.

There is/was a Gradius site someplace which had a section containing a bunch of the Gradius "cameos" that Konami has snuck into a load of its games...not sure if it ever covered this game (then again, did anyone play this game?).

*raises hand* (perhaps unsurprisingly)

Other references..

Parodius: The angelic pigs (actually, two of Michael, which is a bit odd) carrying the congratulations banner when you win championships.
Twinbee: The Sky Bridge courses (complete with music) and Dr. Cinnamon in the shop.

It's an OK game, but was pretty much just something to pass the time until Mario Kart Advance came out.

While it is a Capcom game, I swear that when Wily enters with his first form the music during the hi-speed chase in the last Gradius level plays.

edit: UGH, I feel like an idiot, forgot to mention the name -- it's in Mega Man 7.

And then the Mario Kart on GBA turned out to kinda suck... I think this is actually a better game, if not just for the fan service.

Whoops, does this qualify as derailing the thread? Um, also, shmups... they are great.

I thought Mario Kart GBA was excellent myself (though the bonus unlockable versions of the SNES courses in Mario Kart GBA suck), but I haven't played Krazy Racers. I want to play it, though. The Konami references sound cool and I heard good things about the game.

One Gradius reference not on that site:

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow for the Nintendo DS - One of the bosses is a swarm of bats. The swarm assumes different shapes to attack. One of the forms is a Moai head. This form even attacks using energy rings.
