Problems turning off my Sony Content Advisor...

This thing is seriously annoying me because it's poping up ALL the time on our Vaio, whether I'm on the net or not. I don't even remember activating it, so I don't have a password to deactivate it!

I don't think I can un-install it; either.

Is there ANY other way to deactivate this thing? Perhaps Sony has some universal password to do so.

I don't actually own one, but can you disable it from your startup items?

Go into the Run command and type "MSCONFIG." Go to the "Startup" tab, and see if you see anything resembling the program. If you do, just uncheck it.

It might be the one built into IE, which has been known to get activated by mistake on occasion: To disable it, try these instructions.

Get Firefox, man. It's immune to all the crap that affects Internet Exploder.

Dude, you can have problems with ANY brand of desktop or laptop computer-PC or Apple; brand doesn't make a darn bit of difference in my experience. Early last spring, I got a Dell laptop, and we had so many problems with the thing that we ended up sending it back to the company and getting a refund. But if you want to argue brands, an IT guy my dad knows well from a company he used to work for mentioned Sony as one of the more reliable brands.

Or even better, DON'T buy a brand name computer and build one yourself. It'll be faster and run smoother than any crap Dell or Gateway can pump out.

Agreed. And most manufacturers like to load their systems with applications that, further from enhancing your experience, only eat up memory and processor power. For nothing. I'm happy I blanked out that gateway laptop and turned it into the fine machine that it is.

Well I THINK I have successfully removed Sony Content Advisor, so thanks again!

Yeah, I have a good friend from church who's offered to build me a computer ; he actually builds computers as a hobby! I'm using the family Vaio now, so once I get my own place I'll definately have to take him up on that offer.

Great to hear. Still, Dave, I suggest you install Firefox. (www.getfirefox.com) Much neater browser, none of the vulnerabilites of Exploder. I haven't had any spyware installing on my system ever since. And boy, do I frequent places infested with it when looking for r0mz.

Thanks for that suggestion, but I'm not using Explorer Specineff, I'm using Netscape 7.2 Netscape has seldom given me problems; the first time I ever used the internet was on Netscape, and I used it a great deal in college as well. I might check out Firefox, though, so thanks!

then people wonder why dell, gateways and hp's are so inexpensive. When sponsors fill up your hard drive with crap, I wouldn't pay full price either!!!!!

Well, that guy I know who builds computers for a living told me he could build me one for $400 that's better then anything out there today. This Vaio, on the other hand, cost my dad at least $1200 when he bought it, after our old '99 Presario conked out.
