Did Recca have a back story?
I know it's ridiculous to look at shmups for storylines, but I used to think it had based on some of the names on the track listing. I know it takes place in 2303 and Earth/Terra is somehow involved.
Neat looking ship, too. I wonder if there's a compendium for all shmup ship technical specs...

There's a page of backstory in the game's manual, which I believe is translated faithfully in the game's ST. I could scan the manual, but I'm sure shiftace has it down correctly.sfried wrote:I know it's ridiculous to look at shmups for storylines, but I used to think it had based on some of the names on the track listing. No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Eightbit Fighters says it's "GFSF Cruise Starfighter 'Recca' ", but I'm not sure where he pulled that from.sfried wrote:I was just wondering if Recca was the name of the ship and if it had any specific designation (like Vic Viper is designated "Vic Viper T-301" and Axelay likewise the "D-117B Axelay Stratafighter").

Thanks for the info and the website. I don't know where some site pulled off "D-117B" from Axelay, but it's not like anyone would want come up with designations like that.Ghegs wrote:Eightbit Fighters says it's "GFSF Cruise Starfighter 'Recca' ", but I'm not sure where he pulled that from.
I don't know if there are any other compilation sites like these. Most mecha sites nowdays are reserved for giant robots, and I thought the Recca did have an interesting configuration. (So does most other shmup ships.)

Playing devil's advocate, that could be something like the name of their military division, or the pilot's callsign. Maybe he wanted to be a ninja when he was in high school.Ceph wrote:Not sure about the designation, but the ship is definitely named 'RECCA', you can see the name on the left side of the cockpit.

I know this might sound completely speculative (and another case of "It's just you"), but is Cho Ren Sha 68k somehow connected with Recca?
Case in point:
1. The sound effect used for selecting in Cho Ren Sha is the same as the sound effect used for getting a powerup in Recca.
2. One of the casual medium and huge sized enemies unmistakably resembles the unused "boss" at the cliffhanger ending of Recca.

3. The spinning enemies that stretch out its arms to fire beams also ressembles one of the bosses in Recca (but it's arms are already "stretched out").

I could also argue that by this, Cho Ren Sha might actually be the unofficial "sequel" to Recca, but that's stretching it...
Which begs the question, did Cho Ren Sha also have a backstory as well?

Doubt it. The makers of Chorensha took quite a few bits from a number of games, including Tatsujin, Batsugun and Recca. Enemies, enemy patterns, bullet patterns and some other bits are derived from chunks ripped from other games. If there's any connection, then it is based on stuff ripped out of the game, rather than being made by any of the programmers/designers.sfried wrote:I know this might sound completely speculative (and another case of "It's just you"), but is Cho Ren Sha 68k somehow connected with Recca?
I'm not sure if it is related, but there's a list of games set as the default high score table. Check it out and see for yourself.

There's no way that could be coincidence. I bet at least one of the devs played Recca back in the day and wanted to bring the "unfightable boss" to life.Gungriffon Geona wrote:that's not just similiar, that's freakin' uncanny.sfried wrote:2.
