BulletMagnet just hit me up about this. I'm still planning on trying to make it. Bay, could you PM me with directions for getting to your place from Manhattan & any contact info I might need?

Thanks, hope to see you guys on the 23rd.

I'm new to the area and basically have nothing to do on my free time except be at home. The only date that's bad for me is the weekend of the 30th because I'll be out of town. Other than that, just let me know when and I'll be there.

I really hate to bail from one of these for the upteenth time, but the 23rd isn't looking good. I'm still free for Sunday if that somehow works for everyone else though.
Good luck or cry.

so true.

we aren't going to jeff's this time around, its just a chillaxing at my pad. thus, i won't expect anyone but some of my local friends to roll in at the normal time. i'll just say 2pm is a good time to make it by.

this isn't going to be a big thing like i usually do, it's going to be a small shmup crowd, judging from the responses here, very small. :?

ill PM my info out to you guys now.

Aaww man, I'd love to show up and meet some of you guys (and check out Futari and PS), but I have a friend's birthday party to go to Saturday evening. I doubt I'd be able to make it back home in time.

Bay, how far outside of NYC are you? Of course, traffic on Saturday will probably suck as well. I suppose I shouldn't be so rude and just invite myself either  --is anyone welcome?

anyone interested in shmups is welcome, the other meets ive had were more diverse and we went over to jeffs arcade.

this time around we'll just be playing boards that people want to try out, i've got a feeling these will be the top 3.

1) ketsui
2) mushi 2
3) ibara 2

im not that far outside the city, its northern jersey. the main line stops here, and takes about 45 minutes from nyc penn station.

driving isn't half bad, you could make your way up from the south or go up to the gwb and cross over for a pretty much straight shot west.

Thanks, Bay. What county are you in? I've been to Bergen County a bunch since I bought my car from a dealer there. Are you in that general vicinity? If you wouldn't mind, could you PM your details/contact info as well?

Thanks,

Great shmeet indeed, awesome to finally get some other forum members out here and to be able to focus almost exclusively upon our beloved genre. Notable lessons learned: 1) Everyone benefits from a good "bomb coach." 2) No matter how friendly and colorful they may seem, bullets do NOT have candy. 3) Shmups are the only things able to get anyone to willingly come to Jersey.

On some of the games featured:

Mushi Futari was excellent - at least as fun as the original. While it was the general consensus that Cave originally intended to do some stand-alone fantasy shmup but decided to paste Reko on top for additional fan appeal (I mean, dinosaurs and giant squids?), no one cared too much. None of us, at least while I was there, was able to knock oxtsu off the top spot, though we'll definitely be trying again.

Pink Sweets, much like the Ibara girls themselves, has a ton of surface appeal, but a few seconds after meeting it you become very quickly aware of how much it wants you to die in horrible ways. The bright colors, toy box enemies, and super cheesy soundtrack all fit together very nicely, and the copious firepower is great to behold (though seriously, a lot of the alternate ship "types" struck me as very useless), but make no mistake, this is a Raizing game, it hates you, and it wants to frustrate you and make you never want to play it again, leaving it alone to be proud of how hardcore it is. Despite the bright bullets, I still lost track of what was going on amidst the cluttered shrapnel and whatnot, and 90 percent of deaths were due to either that or some variation of Insta-Death Lazer (tm). In short, while not uber-difficult, it's a memorizer (and credit-muncher) through and through, and only repeated playthroughs will allow anyone to get anywhere in it. In a semi-bright spot, I managed the (I think) high score of the night on it (largely because everyone else couldn't stand it for too long) - my BIG 2 MILLION points! Me r awsum!!!11

I'd played Ketsui last time, and found myself oddly blase' about it...I tried it again, and nothing much had changed, despite how some people swear by it. Perhaps it's because I'd already gotten my fill of gray-on--gray "I'm going to kick your sorry backside" military-themed shmups with DOJ, but I found Cave's signature charm to be rather lacking...not to mention, it's one of the few shmups from them which I feel genuinely frustrated trying to play. Not an awful game, certainly, but methinks my mindset was more or less the opposite of almost everyone else's there for some reason - while they quickly abandoned PS and glued themselves to Ketsui (pretty intense score competition too ;)), I did the opposite. Guess I'm just weird.

All told, great time as always, though the more "focused" setup this time around made this meetup perhaps my favorite yet. Thanks a million to bay for being our generous host, and I'm greatly looking forward to the next one. :)

Thanks again for the great meet up. Everyone was pretty cool and that collection of Bay's was impressive as hell. Here's hoping work/family doesn't get in the way next time.

Nice write-up BulletMagnet. Although I obviously don't share your feelings about Ketsui.

Fair enough though, I felt pretty indifferent to Pink Sweets and you seemed to be enamored with it. Diversity is a good thing.

And yes, thanks again Bay, for hosting this shmupmeet. Great games and it was cool to meet some fellow gunners face to face. Next time I vote for going out somewhere to eat though, as I realized that it might be nice to have had some time AWAY from the games to maybe talk to each other a little bit. I basically didn't know much more than everyone's names by the time that I left.

... of course, its easy to say this now that I'm not standing in the same room as a machine running Ketsui.

Anyway, blah blah blah -- here are a few pics from the meet!

"Enamored" ain't exactly the word, I don't think. ;) PS isn't so much a game you try to beat so in the end you can say "Wow, that was fun," as much as a game you want to beat and be able to say "HA! How you like THAT, huh? You tried to make me stop playing, but NOW who's your %*&#ing daddy?"

But indeed, always good to see some diversity. :)

We did actually have a rather, er, memorable night out the first time I was there (right, bay? ;)). I certainly wouldn't be averse to doing that again, especially with some other forum members along (though I do remember it being tough to get an open table on a Saturday night).

And dang, I knew someone was taking photos, but was unaware that anyone managed to snap me, as my face was glued to the screen...look away, I'm hideous!

EDIT: btw, bay, did you ever get the chance to look at that extra cab you were looking to buy?
