Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.

Super Mario series has got to be my fave Shoot-em-up being that he's the Sega mascot and started out on Chuck norris's MSX, Sinclair Virtua console

How many shmups have Melee Attacks?? A lot of recent ones do....
What about Captain America and the Avengers? That was a beat em up with shmup levels....

there actually is a beat-em-shmup: konami's arcade version of bucky o hare. it's a lot like double dragon, except that your main weapon is a gun, and some enemies toss bullet patterns at you. iirc a couple future treasure staff worked on it.

if I can quickly interject some seriousness here: this is making the assumption that: (a) any game where you dodge stuff can be considered a shmup, (b) any game with a lot of enemies that you have to kill on screen at once (in any manner) is a shmup, or (c) any 2D game set in the style of "fight/destroy lots of enemies, try not to die, reach an end boss that is harder than most enemies, move on to next level" is a shmup.
