Quasi-Recommendation for a pc/console controller.

Post by druaga »

Long time reader, first time poster.
After using a PS2 controller for many years for all of my console and pc games, I made the jump to real arcade controls.
As I do not have the space or time to build my own, I searched until I found the Quasimoto Quasicon 1P http://www.quasimoto.com/1p.php.
It has twin analog sticks as well as analog buttons and an 8-way joystick. It comes with adapters to connect to gamecube, ps2, x-box and dreamcast. It does not have a trackball or spinner.

Plusses:
1. Connects to PC and most of my consoles.
2. Twin analog sticks are great for robotron and PS2 games.
3. Analog buttons have more 'feel' to them than the PS2 controller buttons.
4. Comfortable as it fits on my lap and the controls are at just the right level for my hands.
5. Lifetime warranty.

Minuses:
1. The first unit I recieved had a problem with one of the analog sticks. I had a replacement within days of calling support. :D
2. The 8-way joystick was way too stiff and not 4-way switchable. (*More on that below).
3. The analog buttons are a bit 'squishy' for arcade games, but you have to realize these are not sanwa buttons in a dedicated arcade panel.
4. No trackball or spinner. (Not that big of a deal to me... most of the games I play are shmups or RPG's.)
5. No support for DC rumblepack.

* I bought one of these http://www.lizardlickamusements.com/ima ... _black.jpg to replace the cheap, stiff 8-way stick. Warning... i had to modify the inside of the controller case by removing 1/8" material on each side of the joystick mounting area in order for the sanwa stick to fit. I doubt that my warranty is valid now, but playing Battle Garegga is a joy.

Edited because I can't count to five.

That's a good idea, especially for an arcade controller. I have heard that the x-arcade parts aren't that great.
However, what I was looking for was something that could pull double duty as an analog controller for my consoles as well. The quasicon has twin analog sticks.

I'm a bit confused. I will state this, however, that I'm not a fan of having the twin sticks on there...or the button positions... Lots of clutter. Anyway...is it even possible to use the stick in the same manner as a pad? For the pics it seems like you wouldn't be able to hit many buttons while controlling the sticks.

Honestly, if you wanted analogue sticks that badly, it probably would have been better to find a couple of Ultrastick 360s and gone from there.

The three buttons on each side of analog sticks are the R/L1, R/L2, and R/L3 buttons. It does seem a little cluttered to look at and it took some time to get used to but I like it better than a PS2 controller now.
Yes, the 8 way stick is a replacement for the D-Pad and it is a huge improvement.

If I had time/space/tools and skill to build my own controller I certainly would and it would have sanwa 4/8 way switchable sticks, happ 360 analog sticks, sanwa convex buttons, spinner and trackball.

Alas, I had to make a compromise and this is what I chose.
The original post was meant to help others who have a pc and multiple consoles have one controller that works well with different types of games.
