This game, by the videos I've seen, has me psyched. I am a sucker for a good Konami shmup.

Well, they did bring Gradius and Gradius III to VC (Along with Konami Arcade Collection for DS, and if you count II on JPN VC), so things could change.

Since when have graphics been innovative? Since WaveRace?

Things could change, but those were both games that were released on Nintendo consoles. The graphics look a lot better then Type-X games; very bright and lush.

I don't know if this has been posted yet, but AM-Net has released the preliminary "page" for info on Otomedius.

I posted the translation on my blog, but essentially the original page can be found here: http://am-net.xtr.jp/game/profile.cgi?_v=1171286947

The game is scheduled for release in October and looks like it will ship for $8,000 for the full unit. And about $2,500 for a conversion kit.

Only now I heard about this, and rushed here to see if anyone had any info about it... and of course I found a huge thread about it.

Videos look cool, it seems to play a lot like gradius. I don't care about the "sexy" stuff as long as the gameplay is good.

And IMO, it's looking good.

I haven't seen any video where the touch screen is used at gameplay so far. I read there's a certain weapon that uses...

but here I am, hoping for a PS2 port ..... what was the last game released by Konami for the PS2?

I've seen it in one or two videos...IIRC, there's some special weapon or other that, when you use it, everything onscreen freezes for a few seconds, and during that time you tap your finger repeatedly wherever you want the weapon to hit. Once the time's elapsed, bombs away. Something like that.

For better or worse, that mechanic would seem to make the Wii the only likely home for a console port. The Wiimote could be used instead of tapping. Anyone know how many buttons the game uses? The Wiimote only has two obviously.

Cmon, this could be substituted with a rectangle controlled by an analog stick.

Shit, so much for "perfect" ports. Back in my time we would be glad the port played a bit like the arcade version at all :)

PS2 port please! :)

Which is exactly the same as using the Ink Bullet attack in Ookami. Ookami does not require a Wiimote. Otomedius is doing nothing that either an analog or digital controller plus a couple of buttons can't replicate.

Blech. That would be like playing House of the Dead with a pad.

Hardly. The tapping, which in the videos I've watched isn't even used that often, is just one part of the game (as opposed to HotD being all about shooting things with a gun constantly without breaks) and I'd say the mechanic does nothing to immerse the player in the game like holding a lightgun does. Of course I haven't played it, but the thought of taking one hand off the controls in the middle of the game just so I can tap-tap-tap the screen feels disruptive.

PS2 port please.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Konami wants to know what weapons you'd like to see in the game. Please vote one per category within the next two weeks.

After clicking the confirmation button in the lower-right, you will be given two buttons. The upper button will confirm your vote, and the lower one will take you back to the poll.

Descriptions are given for each weapon when you click on them. My translations are not perfect and Konami's descriptions may have omitted features. If you know what Eagle Wind actually does or want to clarify certain weapon abilities, please do :)

Missiles:
Napalm Missile - Will travel along the ground and has a lingering explosion upon striking an enemy (Gradius 2)
Upper Missile - travels upward until striking the ceiling. Two can be fired at a time (Gradius III)
S. Spread - small bombs are released behind the ship. The bombs are strong, but with a limited blast radius. Two can be fired at a time (Gradius III)
Rolling Missile - missile travels straight down and penetrates through enemies. (Gradius Gaiden)
Eagle Wind - [I cannot figure out what this is saying and I sold my copy of Gradius V. Something about the position of the options relative to the player ship changes which direction the missiles travel.] (Gradius V)
Rocket Punch - penetrating missile that launches to the front and returns when finished (Parodius Da)

Shot:
Reflex Ring - a ring that is shot forward and returns like a yo-yo. (Gradius 2)
Fire Blaster - a short-range flame weapon that only shoots forward. It will burn as long as the shot button is held. (Gradius 2)
Back Double - two shot streams facing forward and 135 degrees counter-/anti-clockwise, respectively (Gradius III)
Auto Aiming - Double that automatically aims at any enemy between straight and 90 degrees counter-clockwise. (Gradius Gaiden)
Napalm Shot - attack that causes large-radii blasts. (ThunderCross)
3-Way - [not going to bother] (Parodius Da)

Lasers:
Up Laser - horizontally-oriented lasers that shoot directly upward (Gradius 2)
Down Laser - horizontally-oriented lasers that shoot directly downward (Gradius 2)
Twin Laser - two short forward-firing lasers (Gradius III)
Gravity Bullet - explodes upon contact with enemies or terrain and emits an explosion to damage anything nearby (Gradius Gaiden)
Homing Laser - a forward-firing laser that will arc to hit enemies in a limited veritcal search pattern (Xexex)
Shadow Laser - a penetrating blue laser that leaves a shadowy trail (Xexex)

It looks like they will re-release every Metal Gear Solid game... including the PS1 one! It kinda surprised me to see the PS1 logo there, heh :)

If Konami is still going to release a PS1 game... why not port this to PS2?

We want a PS2 port! :)

Like in Nanostray.

No more distracting control gimmicks in shmups, please!

Strange, there's a small article on this in the current Arcadia, with a totally different list of weapon choices.. :?

Anyway, Eagle Wind fires missiles relative to your position on the screen. If you're in the top half, they fire up, if you're in the bottom half, they fire downwards.

Excellent comparison with Okami; good point. I don't think the player has to touch a certain body part of one of the gals, so, otherwise, this game looks really fun!

OT, do Japanese men just not find most Japanese women to be attractive? How come they're always putting hot white gals in their games??

If anyone's interested, Majoria News has a link to this page on GPara, which has a chunk of new (to me, at least) screenshots and art for this game. The more I see of the former, the more I agree with the sentiment that this really shoulda been done with 2D graphics...if it shoulda been done in the first place at all, that is.

Cultural misperception.
