Your ship takes up over 1/8 of the screen, moves very slowly, and the hitbox extends outward over parts of the ship that aren't even there. You die instantly if even a tiny part of your ship hits one enemy shot, and each time you die, you restart at a previous checkpoint, A 'LA R-Type, as opposed to "on the fly." Finally, no matter how many quarters you put in, only one quarter is needed: you are set with a stock of only three continues, and when they're gone, they're gone...and so are you, when you leave the arcade to cease playing that god-awful game.

Any manic shooter where the bullet sprites go UNDERNEATH the player sprite. There are many non-manic shooters [particularly in the Genesis/SNES era] that have bullet sprites fly underneath the player sprite. But having a manic shooter do that is just..... Ugh. Thank God for whoever came up with bullets overlapping the sprite.
Note: Judgement Silversword suffers from the mistake of having bullets go underneath the ship. I still forgive it because it's too damn awesome.

And B-Wings which the player's ship suprisingly gets BIGGER as you power up your ship!TWITCHDOCTOR wrote:Reading this description only makes me think of Ghost Pilots for the Neo-Geo.Andy 5 wrote:"The Weak Giant"

I've mentioned this in about every shmup thread with the word "BAD" in it, but once again I must say that "Deep Blue" wins again.
A power-up system severely flawed to the point of wanting to break the controller...and never die. If you don't one man this thing and you're anywhere past a checkpoint...forget about it. You are never given adequate time to power back up sufficiently to deal with enemies.
Why do I own the TG-16 game? I dunno. I guess for the collectability, cuz it sure ain't fun.
Sheesh.

Or better yet: take the Mr. Do! approach. You fire 1 shot which bounces around the screen until it hits something, then when it does you have to wait for your shot power to recharge. Either that or catch your own shot.Zebra Airforce wrote:You forgot there is a 1 bullet on-screen limit. You are a missile and you have to hit ships. You lose a life every time you hit a ship.

Ketsui PS2 port production meeting...
"hey guys we've got a problem with the backward scrolling on the final level"
"shall we do something different with it then? Let's just incorporate something else"
"no, we'll cancel the game"
"ah ok, now I've got time to code the final boss bullet patterns for the DS version"
"forgot to say, that's not getting a release either"

Oh my god, you mean like Space Invaders? That would make it simply unplayableZebra Airforce wrote:You forgot there is a 1 bullet on-screen limit. That way if you miss you have to wait for your incredibly slow bullet to leave the playing field before firing again.

Umm, yeah. That idea's even worse. Just imagine how hackneyed the game play would be, especially if after each time you lose a life (after hitting enemies, of course) you have to restart from a "check point."
Then imagine a swarm of popcorn enemies that you all have to destroy. You'd be out of credits in about 2 minutes or less!
It's been done. Just not in a shmup.D wrote:I guess a bad idea would be a shmup where you shoot old people.
I don't know where that came from (I really don't), but it would be bad wouldn't it?
And no pickles! Oh god help you if I find pickles!

You know what I simply think the WORST idea is?
The worst shmup premise that NEVER needs to even be implemented any more at all is that in an outrageously difficult shmup, you have to restart the entire level all the way back to the beginning with just a measly pea-shooter and also with totally no proper power-ups close by at all when your ship/character is destroyed... especially after making it so *very* far into that level to where you have already reached a boss, too!! How STINKING INFURIATING is that!?
!
Remember Super R-Type on the SNES? WOW, that was such a blatantly rotten turd of a game indeed due mainly to such an absolutely brain-dead use of the checkpoint system — EXACTLY what I’m talking about!!!
Boy, if this were done in a bullet-hell shmup, then imagine somebody throwing the monitor HARD against the wall as a result, you know?
!! I mean, that game would be a serious and utter throw-away right there, wouldn’t it now?

In all seriousness, it is an...intriguing...way to handle death. If you havn't memorized the level you're screwed. Hard. Repeatedly.

Exactly. Has anyone ever thought about why this movie has never been aired on tv? Besides from it being bad (but pretty cool at the same time!)Specineff wrote:Deathrace 2000?D wrote:I guess a bad idea would be a shmup where you shoot old people.

Please somebody tell me they ever saw this on tv.
Boy, who came up with that idea. I guess it was a forecast of how society would rough up in the future.

Here is a better idea...
Or better yet, just shut the whole forsaken-damned game off and smash it up hard into such many tiny bits with a hammer or anything like that. Period. That way, you will TRULY be out of your misery for sure, you know?JoshF, you wrote:These types of games it's telling you your gone be raped by Jeffrey McWild if you keep playing. On the other hand, it is really fun if you can fight back and get powered up again.
