How well do plug-in modchips work on PSX/PSone?

Solely for playing import/backups, not homebrew. I'm more than just a little skeptical.

It probably has an MP3 decoder that transfers through the back of the parallel port. As for playing copied games, you'd probably have to swap discs. Insert an original, the "Game-Enhancer" will then prompt you to insert the burned disc and press "X" or something. Just a guess. You're really better off buying a mod-chip for like $10 and installing it yourself.

Better check if you have the right model Playstation, it can only be used on the older ones with the parallel port. But if you don't, they're peanuts to buy anyway.

I think a swap disc like PS-X-Change or Breaker Pro might be a better option if you're not looking to solder. Should come with a springie thing to hold down the disc lid sensor.

I am not sure if it will handle games with redbook audio though.

Also, PS-X-Change doesn't work on my PSTwo, but Breaker Pro should.

It's with the PSX console with production model numbers 7550 and below that have the required parallel port that's necessary to hook up said Goldfinger-type of cheat devices. I own several including an Innovation produced Super Game Wizard version and even an odd cheat hacked device that allows one to play original B&W GB games on the PSX itself (through the parallel port access point).

It's the PSX production model no.9000 and up or even the PSone version that doesn't have the parallel port.

The various Goldfinger cheat devices work well for playing most PSX imports, provided that they aren't of the multi-disc variety (playing PSX imports that span more than one disc really does need a chip-modded PSX to work/load up properly). One can even play burned CD-Rs of PSX games for that matter -- SCEI capped that problem by releasing the 9000 series PSX console to put an stop to that particular rampant problem (back in the day).....
