I've just discovered this cool little shooter, and after looking through the search thread it seems to not really get a lot of mention here. Why is that?
Seems pretty influential to me when you consider it's got things like multi-directional firing, graphics that were clearly nicked for gradius and salamander and up the screen sections.
It's also got scramble influences, or is that the other way around, as they both came out in the same year.
Vanguard - Where's the love?

ok i just had a quick round of this and, yeah, nice. ^-^
love the looks of the diagonally scrolling areas.
pretty impressive stuff for it's time.
also, apparently it got a sequel!
did i just suddenly explode at the end of round 1 or was that fireworks?
it did up the round indicator...

I remember playing Centuri's Vanguard cab in 1982-1984...
If you were around back in 1982, one could play the full-sized arcade game cabinet of Vanguard that was licensed to Centuri from Konami for manufacture and distribution in the USA. It's funny that on the Atari 2600 cartridge of Vanguard, it says licensed to Atari Corp. from Centuri (it should've read "licensed from Konami Co. Ltd. of Japan" instead). Oh well, just a little copyright mistake on Atari's part there. ^_~
The Vanguard cab had a cool 8-way digital-based joystick and four seperate fire buttons (Up, Down, Left & Right) located to the right of the joystick control. The Atari 5200 SuperSystem version of Vanguard was an excellent port of the arcade game of the same name... ^_~
The not-often seen USA Centuri version of Vanguard cabinet upright appears from time-to-time at the yearly California Extreme classic arcade game & pinball show..... ^_~

Huh? Vanguard was SNK, not Konami. I love the 2600 version. Quite impressive for the system. 5200 version is also very good, though, oddly enough, it was one of the few 5200 games that didn't officially make it to the Atari 800.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:If you were around back in 1982, one could play the full-sized arcade game cabinet of Vanguard that was licensed to Centuri from Konami for manufacture and distribution in the USA. LICENSEE: Cinematronics (for the standup cocktail version)
The game was originally created by SNK and licenced to Centuri for U.S. distrabution.

Re: Vanguard - Where's the love?
I sometimes wonder if game companies back then shared intel between them or if moles were planted, as more than once I've seen very similar and ground breaking games developed around the same time. Or maybe they were in the same mindset.DazTM wrote: It's also got scramble influences, or is that the other way around, as they both came out in the same year.
