Best Power-UP

Post by DazTM »

Power-Ups were definately an influential aspect of the shoot-em up, but what are your favourites? I've a particular soft spot for the option you can acquire in Prehistoric Isle.

Well... Just for showing off, it would be Super Nashwan Power, I'd say.

Acquire the golden colored Gunhed icon for 8-way auto-fire!

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

By picking up the "golden" colored Gunhed spacecraft icon in the classic PCE/TG-16 Hu-Card shmup of Gunhed/Blazing Lazers, one can shoot in 8 different directions at the same time! (Of course, if one were to pick up another power-up, the cool hidden 8-way auto-fire power-up will be lost & replaced by whatever's superceeded by it...) Now that's power to the max! ^_~

Don't know if it could legitimately be called a powerup, but the black hole bomb is pretty damn cool!

I agree with Dave_K.. I love how your weapons can change so quickly and dramamtically in Batsugun. I couldn't believe it the first time I played.

Another awesome power up can be found in G. Darius, while you and a boss are having a laser battle. Depending on how long your battle is, your laser can power up big enough to take up the entire fucking screen. I've seen it with my own eyes! And I've done it too, many times.

10 times more powerful than this:

I've always liked the maxed out red weapon in Fire Shark for the Genesis.

I like the Gwinbee power up in Detana Twinbee. It summons another ship that not only increases your firepower when you are attached to it, but can also be thrown at enemies too.

Clearly, the best power-up is this, from the Parodius series.

Yes it's the best alright, if you're feeling too powerful. :P

Best Parodius powerup has to be the megaphone, nothing like destroying enemies with wacky phrases or mathematical formulas.

The G-Darius laser battles can get quite intense, truly a struggle between protagonist and antagonist.

The special full screen circling firepower in Vapor Trail. I bet very few people know about this one. You have to trigger it in a certain way and then tap fast without a break until you die. If you stop tapping fast - it disappears.
There's no High score thread on shmups for Vapor Trail, and as far as I can remember, there never has been. So, just for posterity;
Vapor Trail
2,463,630 - ST10- Autofire NO. = 53% of Seylen Autofire NO WR = 85% of Valkirya Autofire ON WR
(Scored in 1988  Trocadero Arcade)

What a coincidence, I just got Vapor Trail in the mail three hours ago, I am playing it right now. I wonder why it seems to be so little known. I like it!

Ceph - You'll need to learn that special firepower trigger on Vapor Trail. My memory is hazy, but its something like; get the power up addition then tap all buttons rapidly and the addition will break off and you will have an amazing circular firepower. Keep tapping fire button fast from then on.

The add-on breaks off when you press C, tapping B (shot button) after throwing it off does nothing. I'll try again.

EDIT: I tried 4 times, can't get it to work. I've got a Japanese cartridge, maybe it's different from the US-release?

Vapor Trail is an arcade original, later ported for the Mega-Drive.

Maybe this power-up is only available on the Arcade version
