I one credited Rtype [Arcade] on 1 life !
PSX [arcade]. I reached level 11 w/o losing any life to finally lose all of them against the big ship. 3 months of intense practice finally paid off.the 2nd loop is really a bitch. My score was 505600

So, you mean you got to stage 2-3 (second loop/3rd stage?)
If I remember correctly there are a total of 8 stages. The last being a boss fight without any real actual "level".
I'm confused now, its been a long time since I played it.
1st stage...features those claws and the "Alien" boss
2nd stage...blood n guts with test tubes/ heart-vagina boss
3rd stage...attack big alien ship/shoot core engine
4th stage...that "forest like area" with green beads everywhere/ 3 part boss
5th stage...orange fire like backround with giant wormlike creatures/ clumps of rocks with eye boss
6th Green pipes with "engine blocks" floating around. (Factory?) Boss, engine blocks? Extra boss in PC-Engine version
7th... green area with lots of little enemies coming from the top as well as bottom. Boss?
8th...final boss fight
Its late, and my memory could be wrong...I haven't played the game in quite a while as it shows.

Yeah; R-Type just keeps incrementing the stage number, so it refers to 2-1 as "Stage 9", etc.TWITCHDOCTOR wrote:So, you mean you got to stage 2-3 (second loop/3rd stage?)
There's a level, but it's a relatively short (and pretty repetitive) one. Other than that you've remembered the stages correctly. If I remember correctly there are a total of 8 stages. The last being a boss fight without any real actual "level".
I oughta fire this back up again sometime; last time I played I one-lifed my way into that wave-cannon firing mech right before the level 7 boss. Since I never mastered the Checkpoint of Doom[TM] that pretty much ended my run.

I have one credited to stage 14 on the actual arcade version, but there it gets really tough, also the sprites start flickering disappearing because there are too many for the board to draw.
Nevertheless, psx version plays slightly different and getting even to the second loop is well done. I dont think I got any further than stage 11 myself.
But then you can also start from secons loop in the psx version, which is nice.

thanks for all the praised guys, I appreciate it. I actually find the PSX version harder than the arcade one. The PSX runs at 60fps and the arcade one at 55fps which makes it much slower. It might not be obvious if you first play it, but after praticing the PSX rev it is pretty obvious.MJR wrote:I have one credited to stage 14 on the actual arcade version, but there it gets really tough, also the sprites start flickering disappearing because there are too many for the board to draw.

After playing the the PSX rev so much I can easily get to 14on MAME because of it slower pace mode (100% no frameskip).

If you can one life it to the end of level 7 you have pretty won the game. With the 2 clip on balls around you (above and below) the last level 8 boss is a joke. They shield you against the "Bydo's babies" (for lack of a better word) that fly around you. You don't even have to move one inch, stay on the far left and shoot your force module into Bydo's mouth and Voila !. Just wait for that S.O.B. to die.

The PC-Engine port may be more difficult than that...the last boss I mean.
I pretty much get to stage 7 1/2. I can get past the checkpoint, but cannot reach the boss, so I have to start from the checkpoint without powerups...which is an effort in vain imo.
BTW: Nice playing! I'm sure it feels really cool to have 1CC something like R-Type. The only R-Type I've 1CC, was Super R-Type on the SNES.
I think I may try the first one again, but using my X-Arcade along with MAME on the Xbox.

Hmm... So what makes the last boss harder in the PCE version? And, is the rest of the game pretty accurate to the Arcade? Been thinking about getting the PCE R-Type.TWITCHDOCTOR wrote:The PC-Engine port may be more difficult than that...the last boss I mean.

Nice1 yojo!
You should press on the the 2-ALL. Reason being; if you leave it now you will forget the routes and have an uphill struggle should you try to do it later on.
The Irem games of this era all ended at the completion of the 2nd loop: R Type, X Multiply, Image Fight.

congratulations.
my previous area manager used to have the US original arcade cab of this game in his house
(sold it to a friend of bloodflowers, incidentally)
the toughest part of this game, is a death on stage 6 onwards will basically mean the end of the credit. there is no 1ccing r-type, it really has to be done perfect on 1 life.
well done

Well, not really. You have to suicide on Stage 7 or 14 in order to milk the trash dumper for a 2mil+ score.it really has to be done perfect on 1 life.

My memory of the 2-ALL is hazy, 19 years hazy. All I can remember is that the 2-ALL is a fairly anticlimactic ending. You'll have to ask tviks, du-ku yac or Ben Shinobi for a clearer answer. My mate KAC did it a few times with a 1.1mil 2-ALL. We used to play a 2 Player game in London's Chinatown arcade. One of us would start and the other would go off for a meal and return before Player 1 lost his first life. We used to do this on Gradius II Vulcan Venture too - the 1LC would make Player 2's game different (I've explained this before). So you get a different ending than the one at the end of the 1st loop ?
Anyway yeah, just keep going a bit more yojo!

My personal best - was stage 15 -on the original arcade machine. -I must have 1cc'd it coz if you lose a life in the later levels -you'll not likely get back into the game.
I've also completed- Rtypes on the PS1- thats all the way round the levels- twice- you get a new FMV sequence- that you'd not get in the original arcade.
My-score tho- i'm not sure- i dont remember it being over 1million - i seem to remember it being about 800,000 roughly.
-great game- loved playing it
