New to Modern Shooters/ Under Defeat

Post by slap_fight »

ok, i've played gradius v as well but to me that's still an old franchise.

anyway, i thought i'd give some of these newer shooters a go recently and to my surprise, i really like under defeat.

i haven't been impressed by many games of recent years, so i was pleasantly surprised when i got to level 1-5, the graveyard level, which starts with this really moody soundtrack and a good 10-15 seconds after the soundfx fades up. wow, it was a simple yet effective little feature. i'm not sure if this effect has been used in any other game, but fancy that, of all the multi-million pound epic games out there that doesn't impress me at all, along comes a shoot 'em up of all things made me sit up.

from what i've seen. cave games aren't for me unfortunately. i don't know where i'm going with this thread but i thought i'd share my thoughts anyway.

Welcome to the club! If you've got access to a cube or a DC, you ought to give Ikaruga a go around.

May I suggest Border Down - the other fine work of game from our friends G.rev - the same folks who bring us Under Defeat. It is fun challenge game and has nice classic feel.

I am fond of games of the olden days. I think I am becoming grumpy, grouchy old man :( . I am suck so bad I cannot play new shooting games well though I try Lord knows I am try to play but I suck so bad its not funny. I am play classic games far better and am revisiting them today and playing them better than I do at youth.

I don't know where I go with this post but enjoy your games :D
Under Defeat is one of my favorites and in my top 25 - only G.rev games were new games in my top 25 the rest were old console games.

Under Defeat is about as old school as new school shmups come.

May I suggest Dodonpachi Dai Ou Jou :P

(yeah, and border down is great too. Might as well pick up the taito 2 legends pack to grab up G Darius while you're at it.)

The effect was used in Darius II. Maybe it's G.Rev's homage to TAITO shooters?

Since G.Rev was formed by ex-Taito staff, you never know.

Since Cave games were mentioned specifically, I would imagine that most "bullet hell" shmups would be out (otherwise, I would recommend the DC port of GigaWing 2...I generally don't like Takumi games, but I do like this one).

I might recommend the following, though:

Psyvarier 2 (DC, PS2, Xbox)
Raiden III (PS2)
Shikigami no Shiro II (DC, PS2, GC, Xbox)

A lot of people bag on Raiden III for this and that...but I think it's a fun game, especially with two players.

Yeah, Raiden III is seriously underestimated. Very satisfying game if you can get into the groove of it...
Btw, there's a really charming review of it on Eurogamer.net that might arouse your interest. Both the PS2 and PC versions are very good.

If only your ship wasn't as sluggish in Raiden III... That and the absence of the beloved toothpaste laser make it a ho-hum sequel. Raiden DX is still the best.

I keep forgetting about Raiden III. I suppose it's a mental block. I just traded in my PS2 and it makes me sad when I think about it.

Yeah, I can hear everyones gasps of surprise and a few chuckles of laughter out there. I need to get on the ball and order that Japanese PS2 as originally planned.
