PS2 Modchips

Post by Gorecki »

Recently, my brother's PS2 stopped working. A friend of his, having moved on to PS3, gave him an old chipped PS2 to replace it (old style, not a slimline). As soon as I found out about this there was one word started flashing across my mind: IMPORTS.

However, I have a few questions. Obviously, I don't know what kind of chip has been put in, and I'm not comfortable with taking the thing apart to see. Does anybody know if there are various types of modchip available? I understand that it was chipped so that the previous owner could play pirate games. Is it possible that the chip is ONLY useful for this, and will not play imports? Or do all modchips override region protection by default?

I realise I've got hardly any information here for you to go on, but if anyone can give any advice I'd really appreciate it (the prospect of playing Ibara and Dai ou Jou is unbearably exciting, but I obviously don't want to invest that kind of money if the games aren't going to work).
