2. Never, ever take offense to common internet memes. They're used just for the sake of being used.

3. Who cares if people asked for a pic to backup ST Dragon's story. People ask for pics on a thread-story not related to girls. Other people think new threads about random stories are fiction without pics. It's not that uncommon people spread unverifiable bullshit for attention. People may think story threads like this are a waste of time by default.

It's a shame my girl doesn't like gaming too much (I rarely saw her handling a joypad, and when she tried, it was a complete failure, heh), but she doesn't complain about my hobby too much

Actually, I lied about one thing.. she digs Pac-Man, and enjoys some Bomberman and Arkanoid. . Other day when she found out that she could play Pac-Man with an arcade stick at my home... geez, she just stayed in front of PC for 2 hours straight... a friend of mine came by to play some fighting games, and she just did not drop the controller..... and even more weird is that when we were going to play our round of The King of Fighters or any other random brawler, she came and asked "Ah... can we play some multiplayer bomberman?" .. so we fired up that Bomberman game in Mame that can be played in cooperative mode and just credit-feed through the WHOLE game.

She played for like what.. 3 hours straight? I had never seen she playing anything for more than 15 minutes before

Hi Glitch and thank you. I think you know what I am trying to say. The point I was trying to get across was the way women perceive what you are saying and the way it would make them feel. Trust me, I “get” what you are saying. For 6 years I have worked in a predominantly male video games store and for about 4 of those years I was the only girl. At first I gave as good as I got, but it really does wear you down.

Yeah, that would about kill any faith in my gender too. Ya might wanna suspend your pre-determined beliefs juuust for a little bit. At least on here. My best advice for you is when this one thing called Shooting Game Tournament 2008 comes up in a month or two, make a point to enter and participate. You'll learn far more of the culture of here than any other time. You'll also find you or any other girl will be treated like any other person on this forum thing. Battles for score ain't got time for petty differences like race or gender.

yeah, that's they way it works on most predominantly male forums and other groups. nothing wrong with that, but people often fail to realize what a big difference that is with the way people treat eachother in predominantly female forums and groups, where no-one is a target, unless they pissed someone off real bad (and then it's fierce bitching with no fun involved until one side doesn't get up anymore).

Well, it's not even like she needed to make a comment back. Ignoring the comment and only responding to intelligent posts works just as fine. There's no requirements or actually any real encouragement for two people to keep bashin' each other back 'n forth. Most tiffs like that drop after two lines.
In my experience, the semi-comical couter-one-liner is the best defense against an offending post; but only if you feel the need to respond to it. I guess is what I shoulda also added.

I am saying that the way you speak will determine the people who feel comfortable to join your forum and get involved. I didn’t post this just to piss people off, I promise!

if you're not used to a culture of snarky comments and friendly ridicule and wander into a predominantly male forum because you like, say, shmups, then initially you may think "why does everyone here hate eachother? i better keep my mouth shut or they'll hate me too...". cause without non-verbal clues, it can be hard for the inexperienced to figure out how serious a comment is. there's a reason why predominantly female forums are infested with emoticons. ~_^

but it's quite a barrier! it's invisible from the inside (guy: "what's your problem?") and usually misinterpreted from the outside (girl: "you are all mean sexist pigs!".

Understandable. Most the time, unless mods detect a user is going out of his or her way to be a jerkass, any person has basically near-infinite tries to infiltrate a forum via a few successive useful, informative posts. Lurkers just gotta get it in their heads that a first few posts met with any (potentially viewed) flak doesn't mean they gotta leave forever. No user really pays attention to another user's presence that long when they do. Girl gamers in a genre like this gotta realize nobody is out to get them. Both genders also gotta recognize when there's a group of casually friendly people of one gender in the same space and the other gender comes up in conversation, they'll talk more openly about them that the one or two extras of that opposite gender may like. I got stuck backseating conversations of groups of girls talkin' sexist things about guys too. I roll the eyes a little and let them continue their laid-back insights on the opposite sex. When there's a leftfield comment or two, suck it up or ignore it. They're talking about girls (or guys) in general, not directed straight at you. Keep with giving your opinions in player opinion threads and sharing new info you know in threads about game information. The more you properly contribute to informative threads in-passing, the more likely the rest of the culture barriers and stereotypes will deteriorate. If there's always a reasonably steady or cameo-ish presence of four women posting on these boards of their STG experiences, people will recognize 'n respect. Anyway, nobody chases and harasses users from thread to thread...well...unless you got Darius in yer username, but that's all kinds of somethin' else that was his fault.

Every "Hi I'm a new guy" thread is met with many more positive responses than not. I don't even think the other threads about girls bein' on here crossed any lines...and the posts that may have were met with opposing sarcasm 'n such anyway. Every single person isn't really gonna bend to the new user's will though, nor will an entire community bend its speech to accommodate the possibility of lurkers. Can't judge the whole pad by a few not-so-shiny examples. That's up to the lurkers to understand and adjust for.

Being the minority means your voice and opinion often gets drowned out before it’s even really considered, which I feel is what has happened here. The attitude seems to be our way or the highway; there is no comprise.

If that were at all true, there'd still be guys saying offensive sexist jokes directed straight at you, and none of us sure as hell would be explaining our viewpoints on the previous misunderstandings.
