Oh my god the first boss of Salamander 2 also gets my vote. If that doesn't make it into your article then I don't know what should

Two minute mark if you're lazy. This game is like the Super Metroid of shmups.
p.s. this guy's video has invincibility turned on or he would have totally gotten killed when he lunges in.

Thunderforce V has some pretty memorable bosses. My favorite though is Vasteel Original. The music for that boss is still one of my favorites.

that's some hardcore technical sprite manipulation going on there..
mushihimesama stage 3 - the whole damn level..
Agreed. That's my favorite level and boss in any of this type of game.
And another one that I'd like to add,
That blasted boat in the magma stage in the first Giga Wing.
Simply because it annoys me so dang much. Argh!

Definitely memorable, in the sense that I find it one of the most annoying bosses as well (but sort of in a good way,if that makes any sense...-Bridget- wrote:

For all my skill in shmups as a whole.......
That accursed freaking BOAT often manages to somehow hit me. Usually with those dang glowy orbs, it's 2nd to last attack.
There aint many of them at once, and they dont move fast, you'd think I could avoid them easy, but noooooooo, what I ACTUALLY do half the time is just smack right into them.
As a rule I try to save all of my bombs for the final stage/boss (the only stage that can kill me), but half the time I just blow one right there so I dont gotta deal with those dang orbs......

Why hasn't anyone else mentioned Parodius? What happened to the cute 'em up revolution, or was that just lobbying for votes?

Ooh, ooh, I didnt know (till now) that there WAS a sequel to that.....
Whee, went and grabbed it right away
Actually, for me, that 1st boss went down with a splat. As did the 2nd. (2nd stage was real neat!)
It was the CONFOUNDED WORMS in the 3rd that were driving me up the wall.
Argh, I say. ARRRRGGGHHH.
Not quite as annoying as the Giga Wing boat, but still. Very dang annoying.

*laughing*
Haha, this happens so often on new boards, and it does NOT get old.
And someone will always go and look into the "interests" thing in my profile to see if they can figure it out, lol.
Which then makes it MORE amusing.
Haha, as much as everyone always loves to find a real, hardcore girl gamer,
lol, you'll have to look elsewhere, Im a guy.
Those interests in there are real, and admittedly Im rather feminine for a guy (thus, Bridget there is fitting, and I do a cosplay of him), but still, a guy nonetheless.
I seriously never get tired of this.
Oh, and as for shooter bosses:
First time, got to play DoDonPachi (the original) today.
And I forget, it's either the third or 4th boss,
But it's that one that suddenly LUNGES right up into your face, right there at the bottom of the screen (as that's where Im at at that point), and starts dancing back and forth, firing those huge lasers.
So very dang annoying.

Those DANGBLASTED LITTLE BLUE BUG THINGS THAT SPAWN SO VERY VERY MANY AT ONCE.
WHYYYYYYYY do they only appear when Im doing really good? And EXACTLY in the places I dont want them to be.
And it took me a good 5 minutes to get what "Ackbarred" meant. Lol
Too true

If only one boss had to be mentioned in the article, it would have to be this one though.

So true. I know because I just beat Gunbird2 last night! An orange elephant? But yeah, some shmup developers like to trick you like that. Are you at all familiar with final bosses who are usually the "serious" one, but are randomized so that occasionally you fight a silly, but sometimes more dangerous boss instead.Dale wrote:Gunbird2's final boss. Only because the first time I saw it I was playing with my cousin and when the final boss came out I said out-loud "we faught gigantic tanks, mechs, pirates, battle ships and the final boss is a fuckin goofer!?". A pretty classic moment, my cuz can even still recall it despite it happening 3 years ago.
And no pickles! Oh god help you if I find pickles!

You must have played the Japanese version, that one has the elephant. the American version I played has the beaver thing. Now why exactly Psikyo decided to make this change I don't know.Andy 5 wrote:So true. I know because I just beat Gunbird2 last night! An orange elephant? But yeah I know what you mean, developers love throwing the old curve ball at ya.
I did great so much water and milk that I threw up when I was little.

*The twin walkers bosses from Stage 1 of Raiden II.
*The War God from Forgotten Worlds.
*The ferris wheel bosses from Side Arms.
*Nekogumo, the cat-spider, from Guwange.
*Andor Genesis from Xevious. Its droning engine sound really adds to the experience.
*Golem from Life Force.
*Big Core and its variants in the Gradius series.
*The raccoon with the huge nutsack in Sexy Parodius.
*Gormander from R-Type.
*That climate-controlling nutsack in R-Type Final. Nasty pulsating thing.
*The stage 5 boss in Axelay.
*That grim reaper boss in Gaiares.

Titanic Lance, from Darius Gaiden. What a monster, both in armament and sheer, massive size. The music gives me chills, too.
Edit: also, he's a personal favourite more than anything else, but Metal Black's "Sisyphean" third boss, that trash-rolling bug. Good in both concept and actual play, and the atmosphere with those pale grays, livid purples, that swimming background and the evil BGM "Dio Panic" is just morbid.

Ok, a new one from me.
DoDonPachi Dai-ou-jou.
The first boss.
OMIGOD do I hate that blasted thing. None of the other bosses in that are as danged annoying as that blasted thing.
It's Giga-Wing-Boat level annoying.
Takes alot of willpower for me to fight it without dropping 5 bombs on it just because it annoys me......
