Gate of Thunder really takes off

Post by captain ahar »

over the past few months of duo i have got to memorizing the first 4 levels of GoT. so these were a breeze to clear without dying (much ). then a few days ago i finally noticed that the boss of Crown is really, really easy to beat, so on comes Dark City and shit does the game pick up from there.

with the pacing its like a whole different game. now i am starting to fit Dark City into my routine (except those things that track you from the back that spit out waves in a sine pattern. those things always end up clipping me cause i am not looking that far back). then last night, cleared Dark City and got to Crown Core, and the intensity doubles.

i think i've hit another wall. Crown Core is going to take some time to sort out, but i love this game more and more every time i play it. :D

... i love my duo.

edit: apparently, after looking over the review again, i got to the final boss. i am sad.

Awww...

I just bought this off eBay a few days ago! The funny thing is... I have no Duo..! X___________________x;;;; Hopefully my emulator will run it alright..

But I'll be buying a TG-16 today from the flea market (if it's still there), and a friend is selling me his Japanese PC-Engine on Saturday :D :D :D
Now...just need to buy the CD-ROM2 and card thingie...

I managed to get to the last boss in Hard mode a few nights ago. Dark City and the last level are just crazy. I find that Sonic Boom works best in most situations in Dark City, and the good ol' Heat/Earthquake tears up the last one. The final boss is a whole 'nother story.

those fast white wave things piss me off. i got there and all i could do and laugh at how easily i was dying. and i am playing on Normal. after i complete it i am looking forward to giving Devil mode the old college-try (someone elses version  ). i tried this mode once before (back when i was still stuck on Crown... for some reason ) and i couldn't get to the first boss. in short, i loved it. :D i've said it before, but i loves the pain!

GOT id good but it feels more like a Thunder Force III rip off & the gameplay & music aren't as good imo.

Lords of Thunder is better. On of coolest Shmups I've played.

I've masterd it & I can now complete it in one go.

GATE OF THUNDER works fine with the latest MagicEngine emulator. I don't own a Duo but own such gems as SAPPHIRE and STEAM HEARTS :)

GOT is awesome. I ordered it with a Super System card 3.0 after playing it at a friends house who just got a Duo. Blew me away, and now 10+ years later, I still have it and play it. LOT was my first pre-order ever. Pre-ordered it from a retailer out the back of a Gamefan mag. Ahhh, the good ole' days.

I like Gate of Thunder much better than TF. It may be easier but the shooting and action is MUCH more fast paced and viceral.

That said I agree the difficulty doesn't really ramp up till the last two stages such as Dark City (it's such a shame that really cool looking walker mech at the end of the sewer is such a pushover). But stage 4 (?) with all the biomechanical insects attacking you is where it gets tougher and more intense. Also, the first time I saw those giant centipedes jump out of the sand at my ship with their snapping pincers my jaw dropped.

One skiller shmup plus two Bonk classics and a hidden Bomberman game to boot. Gate of Thunder disc = best pack in game value ever.

Sega fanboy.

GOT rocks all over TF 3.

have to agree that i like GoT way more than TF3. another disappoinment that i had with the game though (which Dylan touched on) is the bosses. they can look really cool and all, but so very, very easy to deal with (that last boss though is still "grrr," haven't played the game since he brutalized me)

just got Brothers in Arms and Doom III, so that doesn't help either. :D

Back when the Duo first came out, TTI was trying to move some systems, so they bundled the GoT 3-in-1 disc, Ys I-II, and Ninja Spirit all with the console. What is that, six free games? That's the best pack-in value ever.

Oh yeah, duh. Forgot. All those also came with my Duo, the GoT CD just happens to be fave out of allt he pack in goodies. I got my Duo for just $99.00 back in May '94. Our local Waldensoftware (now EB) was closing them out. Me and my brother already had a TG-16 but wanted to get in on the CD action of course. We saved up about $60 and my super cool dad chipped in the rest. The same month Super Metroid was released. Best.Gaming.Summer.EVER.

Well to be fair, I didn't play Super Metroid until the following February when we got our SNES but still, that was the best gaming summer ever for me. Ahhhh, the 8-16 bit days. Life was good. 8)

I think GOT > TF3 too, but what do you expect? One is a CD game and the other a 512K cartridge. It's still pretty damn amazing what they were able to squeeze out of a 4MB cart.

Not a SEGA fanboy.
imo TFIII has better gameplay, weapons & graphics than GOT & I like the music tunes in TFIII better.
That "Police" on the ship in the intro looks dumb.

I played GOT up to level 5, but I didn't see a multiscrolling level like TFIII,IV or LOT. They're all horizontal. That would add a lot in the level variations.

I would have expected a lot more from a CD game.

LOT now that's an awesome shmup!

My copy of Gate of Thunder just came in the mail today. Maybe I'll give it a run in MagicEngine before I go to sleep... But I kind of want to make a TG-16 to Duo controller adaptor first...
Gah, I'll do it tomorrow morning...

I just tried this game in MagicEngine 0.9.9b5., got to stage 4 or so on my first (and so far only) try...
For some reason it runs with hardly any sound. No music, and only some explosion sound effects, and "Emergency" before the boss battles..
Should I be using 1.0.0 instead?

Probably. The old .9x betas can only stream analog sound directly from the CD. That means, unless you have that little cable connecting your CD/DVD drive to your soundcard, you won't hear any BGM. Give 1.0 a shot, it digitally mixes CD audio.

Thanks for the tip, OmegaFlareX, I opened up my computer and found that the lil cable from my CD-ROM was just dangling loose, so I plugged it into the sound card, and now I've got music from MagicEngine!
I don't know if any of the other sounds are mixing though, but I think just music with no sound effects energises me much more than sound effects with no music...

I'm also fortunate enough to own a Duo, along with Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, and R-Type. great games, although I think Gate is the best of the 3. Hopefully, I will also soon get the Darius games for that system, probably all of them except Darius Alpha, which is basically not possible to own unless you feel like bidding $800 on it on ebay. I don't see myself doing that any time soon, since after all it is what, just Darius Plus stripped down so all you do is fight the bosses. If you own Darius Plus it's not like you're missing anything. I don't think I'll be getting into an insane ebay tussle over it any time soon, until I am independantly wealthy.

Anyway, back to the main topic, yeah, Gate is a pretty good game. When I got my Turbo Duo I was expecting alot of average and generic titles, but I was actually suprised by the level of quality of the games! NEC managed to get some very talented game programmers and developers to make games for the Duo, obviously people who gave a crap about what they were doing. So many great games, Gate really stands out in the shooter genre too. Well designed levels, solid gameplay physics, brilliant graphics, awesome music soundtrack, not to mention big bosses like in Darius!

I haven't actually beaten the game, the farthest I have gotten is to Level 7(I think), the one after Dark City. I've only beaten the Dark City level a few times, the game gets insanely difficult after that point!

Sadly, I haven't really played my Turbo Duo since I discovered that I needed a new AC Adaptor :\ However once I do get one I'll pick up Gate again and try and beat it.

had to dig this out of my drawer and throw it in the Duo today. Cleared on normal first try, with a few lives left. I remember beating it on normal only dying once...LONG AGO. Still impressed myself though, having not played it in a long time and not only not continuing, but still had sme lives to spare. Such a great game.
