Newer Cave Board video problems help?

Post by dpful »

I have an Ibara PCB and the display is very light and low cotrast compared to my other boards. Are the newer cave boards all like that? (it's the only one on that hardware I've tried).

I can get it set just about right if I'm really strict with the screen test, but only if I have the red gain above the rest, and the whole thing set to a pretty high contrast (on the monitor, not in the PCB menu- the contrast setting there seems to wash it out a bit. I have that one turned town a few notches below maximum contrast).

I have a few boards with a relatively weak display (In the hunt and other Irem stuff, Kaneko super nova, I thought espgaluda was a little weak, some others, but Ibara is the worst.)

Has anyone dealt with this? Any hints?

Ibara PCB's RGB output line levels -- increase them...

For dpful,

I use a Commodore Amiga analog RGB monitor which does allow adjustment of contrast and brightness levels (in addition to the adjustable R, G, & B signal lines on my Supergun)...so I really don't have the problem that you describe with Ibara PCB.

On the other hand, the Ketsui, ESPgaluda, & Dodonpachi-DOJ PCBs are notorious for such very high RGB level outputs that it causes the screen display to get momentarily distorted before settlingly down to normal display routines. (Although this doesn't happen if one uses an XRGB-2 setup with an SVGA CRT-based monitor with any of the above Cave shmup titles {excluding the SH-4 based Cave shmup PCB titles}.)

Yeah, my Ibara PCB is ridiculously bright compared to all of my other boards. It looks really washed out unless I put the contrast way down.

Everything from Mushi onwards is on that hardware. I have the same problem with Ibara, but with Espgaluda II it's less pronounced.
Ketsui-The last of the manly cave shooters.

@dpful: what's your setup? cab? supergun? monitor type?
That would help in diagnosing your problem.

I have had zero problems with the Cave SH3 boards (Ibara, Ibara BL, Mushi, Esp 2, Mushi Futari 1.0 & 1.5, Pink Sweets) I've played on my setup (Sigma supergun into Sony PVM RGB monitor). Never had to adjust any contrast settings, the picture is pretty damn perfect just with the stock contrast/color settings on the PCB.

Playing it on a Taito Egret 29 cab, I think with a nanau monitor dual 8 model NS8.
I tried it on another cab that usually gives a little better picture and it was still kind of washed out compared to other pcbs. I'll check it on that again. I know some monitors are more and less sensetive to what's coming in.

I have ketsui, pink sweet, Espgaluda II and never noticed any issues but my monitor is almost brand new.

I just figured it out. There's a little tiny black button on the PCB. Push it and it will take you to the test menu, where you can change the brightness and contrast, which were both turned all the way up on mine.

Keep it coming- anyone else have this game?

I'm starting to think mine might be a little on the light side. Has anyone heard of the video amp on a board lightening? I could imagine failing, but not a general weakening.
The picture is great besides being low contrast (especially in the red, which I thought was also wierd)-- again, I can get it looking pretty normal with the monitor's adjustments, just way off from my other pcb's.

I never noticed anything like this with any of my SH3 cave boards. I assume what Ozymandiaz1260 said didn't fix your board?

no, it didn't help, they just make the signal weaker (so the image isn't too washed out, I've got them set just below max brightness + contrast)
