u.s. maple - talker
death - human
carcass - symphonies of sickness (did the right thing and bought this)

I've been enjoying the first three A LOT; the last three less so.

Had a good day at the wreck-chord store the other day:

Smithereens - 11, $1, cassette tape lol
Shonen Knife - That Christmas 7" for only a dollar! The clerks gave me some shit for getting 'a Japanese Christmas album' but don't knock the 'Knife till you try 'em
Public Image - forget which, nice coverart (12" record) and $3. They had Never Mind the Bollocks for $10 but I passed, the cover on that isn't that great
Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped

But failed in my goal of finding 12" Dinosaur Jr. albums

Went to a pawn shop in Albion, Michigan and found some killer shit.

Cal Tjader "Soul Sauce"
v/a "Great Blues Guitarists - String Dazzlers" The tapeworm song is awesome!
Motorhead "Live - Blitzkrieg on Birmingham '77"
Vivaldi (bunch of concertos 'n stuff)
Chopin (see above)

Neon, you've heard Never Mind the Bollocks right? I'd just hate to think someone let a good record slip through and chose to buy anything by PIL instead.

Oh yeah, I bought it on cassette in 7th grade. One of my very favorites. I usually only buy vinyl because it's cheaper than the CD or I like the coverart. Often it's more expensive, so I don't bother.

Actually my biggest problem with it was hearing it completely ripped by some of the west-coast psyche-folk guys. Beyond that, I guess I have no answer for you--I like quiet beautiful things sometimes (though I don't need 20 albums that sound like this.)

Napalm Death - Smear Campaign (Sure, it sounds a tad overproduced, but it's full of top riffs. :p)
Estradasphere - Palace of Mirrors
Nifelheim - s/t
Viral Load - Backwoods Bludgeoning

Looking forward to the new Blood Duster one as well. There's a song on it called "The Kids Can Get Fucked", which pretty much sums up my feelings on metal fans as a social group.

Robbie Basho - The Seal of the Blue Lotus

non-favorite:
Wipers - Is This Real? -- I don't think I'll ever listen to this one again. The sound isn't that different from the other two, but I don't know. Bland. No song nearly as good as "Over the Edge" or "Youth of America".

I should listen to the Zwan album again so the new Smashing Pumpkins album will sound great. The first single is pretty good.

Kind of a shame, I guess I haven't actually heard that one yet since the CD I have has Youth of America, Over the Edge, etc. I'm definitely getting that box set. Good thing about indie rock is it's cheap and awesome, the Cath Carroll 7" from Unrest cost me like $4 new

The weather suddenly turned hot, so it is time for happy summer music. I think maybe there are 10 happy albums in my whole collection (is there some correlation between this and my love for milder, even cold weather???)

Anyway, it is time for Dogbowl and Kramer's Hot Day in Waco, maybe one of the happiest, bestest albums for the summer that isn't a piece of shit.

Most happy albums are shit. Why?

I think the only albums I own that could be described as happy without any doubt are Afrirampo's. Japan does it best.

Add Slapp Happy's Casablanca Moon (it seems these happy albums need a heavy dose of irony!)

'keep in line, keep in time with the drum...'

Beat Happening - You Turn me On

Anyone else not get Arcade Fire?

They all pale in comparison to Shonen Knife (may their name be whispered in reverence).

...except maybe Afrirampo, yeah.

I'm about to check out Joy Division and the Sonics finally. Striking obvious gold, as Rob said. So many good bands, so little time.

No one's talked about the bands the good Dr. listed in the first post of this page, gonna check them out too.

By sonics I assume you mean sonic youth. These bands both fall in the quandry (at least for me) of being influential hence not always the most enjoyable (IE no perfect albums; nothing I'd rate over an 8/10 if that!) Joy division's Unknown Pleasures is my favorite of the lot, but lacks their hit song (perhaps to its credit?)

Sonic Youth is another beast since they have a lot of periods, which seemingly become less and less interesting. Seems like everyone has a copy of daydream nation. For myself, I've always liked Confusion is Sex, but it certainly isn't what I'd really call a pleasant album. Maybe I'm getting old???

You guys are going to think I'm on crack, but I'd even throw Bauhaus into this early 80's period of influential bands that don't have an album I really like to sit down and listen to regularly. Fortunately Bauhaus has that one good comp...

You are fucking killing me. Mixing up one of the greatest rock bands of the 60s with some noisy 80s/90s heroin artfags is punishable by death 'round these parts. You just sit and think about that CMoon.

nothing wrong with noise, the 80s/90s, art, or fags, but add heroin to the mix!

Listening to TONS of math-y bands:

uzeda :o
don cab
aleuchatistas
bullship
cheval de frise
dysrhytmia
fridge
giant brain
rumah sakit
russian circles
the 90 day men
the flying luttenbachers

Reactions to Sonic Youth tend to fall into three groups:

1. Dem be faggitz

2. Hmm, Daydream Nation was OK

3. Pathetic borderline hero worship

I would say I'm in the third group. Not all the music is great, but I like their approach or whatever, and their good songs are really good.

Then again, unmacho wussy faggishness is a good 80-90% of the music I listen to
