Entirely asinine question, or it should be - you play your favorite games more than the ones that aren't so hot, right? Except I don't. Touhou 10 coming up brought this to the front of my mind. I've played all the Touhou shooter demos and bought more of the games than not on the strength of them, but the only one I've cleared (on Normal, badly) is Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. Obviously, I've seen less of the others, but ask me which is best and I'd tell you Imperishable Night. I have a few Psikyo ports and have logged most time by far on Samurai Aces, despite it being probably the weakest. I think Gradius V is ridiculously good, but can never be bothered to play it (stage select with no power-ups sucks, and it takes too damned long from the start). Gunroar hurts my head - I don't objectively rate it much, but it eats up time like nothing else when I want something random.
Clearly, I'm a dumbass - either I'm playing stuff I don't like that well, or the games I like aren't the ones I think they are. Hardly matters so long as it's fun, but I wondered if anyone does similarly. Not sure if this should really be here or in Off-Topic, but it's a quirk I seem to exhibit specifically with regard to shooters.

I spend a shitload of time on the Kirby series.
For shooters, uh, I really have no clue wtf I do. There's some instances where I go bonkers and start playing everything in sight and others where I just focus on one particular game. Maybe something like half and half.

Well my favorite shooters at the moment are Mushihimesama and DOJ, but both have about 5 hours of gametime combined while Noiz2sa and Parsec47 both have 10 hours apiece. Both are great games, but they can't really hold a candle to Cave's product. I think it's because it's convenient that they are on the PC. I can play a credit, check the forums, play a credit, check my email, play a credit, etc. I need frequent breaks when playing shmups or I punch a hole in my wall.

Just so you're aware you can use a version of the famous Konami code to gain a powered up ship when playing in Stage Select mode in Gradius V. Here it is right here:
http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/gradius5/hints.html
It's a good thing they included this in the game because without it the stage select mode is close to useless.

Mushihimesama is probably my favorite, and I definitely play that the most, but it is followed closely by Shoot the Bullet, which I actually don't play nearly as often. I mostly blame that on the fact that it's on the PC which I'm less likely to be playing games on.
The long, unskippable intro to Gradius V is one of the reasons it isn't one of my favs

I never play anything "to death" unless I'm playing competitively. I think I know around the point when I'm going to get burnt out and stop, and then I play something that I haven't given much time. Or I'll come back to an old standby like Progear.

The most time combined in a shmup must have been Armed Police Batrider, which I religiously played for a couple of weeks, until I pretty much burned out on it after setting a highscore I couldn´t replicate at all afterwards (which had a lot of surprising boss milking in it). And if I ever have the time (or the energy) to focus on a shmup again, I would pick this game for sure. It´s a beast, but very addicting. I don´t think I would ever be able to compete with the good players on this forum, though...
Alien Soldier is a game I really admire, but somehow I rarely ever played it, maybe because there are so many button combination you have to be able to pull of without thinking twice about it. I am sure that this game get´s fun once you get the hang of it, though (and I also believe that this is the same with Radiant Silvergun). Maybe I´ll take the wuss way and play it on slower speeds for some time. Or get the passwords and take the bosses in non-linear order. Just watching a superplay of it and man, that game is just a hardcore gamers dream. It´s also one of the VERY few game that still gives me the feeling of being a little boy in the golden days of 16 bit gaming again. I guess I would have gone nuts for this game back then.
I also regret that I wasted so incredibly much time with unfocused messing around with mediocre or shit games instead of getting more concentrated with the real gems. Dedication towards a handful of games is really a different level of enjoyment. It´s so...noble!

I am having a hard time to focus energy on just one game I am playing everything I can!
What if I say that I like to some degree about 99% of the shoot them ups I own? I am play them all! So I guess I spend time with the games I like
The only game I can say that I spent alot of time exclusivly is R-Type (TG16). I recall times where I spent days playing this game alone utlize the 21 credit trick and used them all to learn the game. I am suck so bad I still don't advance past level 7
.
I play all my shoot games and enjoy them all (well 99% of them anyways)

Same here. I was playing XII Stag when Gradius V was sitting on my shelf, and Stella Deus when I should have been playing Disgaea.captain ahar wrote:i play lots of horrible games. i've been quite fond of playing the dooyong shmups in mame lately. blue hawk, pollux, and r-shark... and no i don't know what's wrong with me...

Well put. With the exception of Castlevania: SotN, I haven't put more than 20 hrs. or so into my favorite games. Some of them, like Shadow of the Colossus, I play almost never because in a way I'm afraid they won't live up to my earlier impressions.DJ Incompetent wrote:If I did, I wouldn't like them best anymore.Veracity wrote:Do you actually spend most time on the games you like best?

Shadow of the Colossus had a shitty ending. Good gameplay though.PFG 9000 wrote:Well put. With the exception of Castlevania: SotN, I haven't put more than 20 hrs. or so into my favorite games. This is actually a very intriguing question. I'd have to answer 'no' for a couple of different reasons. As far as shmups go, some of my favorites are Radiant Silvergun and Gradius V, but those games are just so long and slow-paced that, while I love them to death, I really have to be in more of a mindset where I *know* I'm going to sit down for a few hours with them. Another reason would be that my gf and I've been moving for the last week or so and we've just now got the consoles over at the new place and nothing's hooked up yet except the PC, so I've been MAME-ing it up here and there when I've got a minute. =)
Overall, I'd say that what it boils down to is that a lot of my favorite games across any genre are one-time affairs, or games that I spend large chunks of time with and then put them away for months or years; NiGHTS, Gunstar Heroes, and Phantasy Star IV are some of my all-time faves, but I don't play them everyday whereas I can pick up Batrider or Dragon Blaze almost any time and play a couple rounds (or sometimes even catch a quickie before work =) but I don't love them as much as some of the more "epic" titles so near and dear to my heart.

Pretty much agree with Zero here. Love Radiant Silvergun, but you gotta be ready for the long haul with that bad boy. Plus I only have a burn and I have to connect this junky tape modded Saturn I have to play it.
I have mad respect for Radiant Silvergun because of all the crazy stuff it does, but I am not even that great at it. In fact, I suck at Silvergun.
I do love Raizing though, and play a lot of Raizing.

I suck at RSG my self but have great respect for what it is achieve
I find maximum enjoyment with it when I set aside time for playing it.
Compile games require set aside time for the long haul too
Hey Ayanami get your self a proper copy of RSG

I do, mostly. I feel a little bad about it, because there's all these other games that lots of folks here seem to like -- Gradius V, SnS 2, Warning Forever, Cho Ren Sha, Blue Wish Resurrection -- that I respect as carefully designed entertainment, but I just can't stand to play them for any length of time, and I wonder sometimes what I'm missing.
Also there's some MAME games that I really like, but I don't play them because I have either really bad control issues or the worst reflexes in history.

Seems it's not entirely just me (don't), which is comforting, I guess.
What, 'dumbass'? That's not a non-word, is it? No worse than bloody 'gameplay'. Or maybe it is. Anyhow, I shall henceforth endeavour entirely to forgo its use, lest you be discomfited. You're right about burnout, or fear of it - that can contribute to wanting to postpone stuff that seems really promising. Thinking about it, I also tend to fall automatically into playing related games in order of original release. Not really logical, since they're not exactly Wagnerian epics, but never mind.DJ Incompetent wrote:don't talk like shoe-sama

This would have been a better off-topic thread.
But to answer the question, I don't replay long games; Zelda: OOT is my favorite game of all time, and I've never gone through the whole game again more than once. Same deal with Killer7, although I should play Killer8 one of these days.
With shmups, yes.

Aye, was why I said I wasn't sure - sorry, someone with mod powahz please move if it ought to be there. Should've specified in the first place, though, that I'm talking in particular about things that're more or less indefinitely replayable. Anything narrative-centric, or that takes 50+ hours to play once, isn't really what I had in mind.shinsage wrote:This would have been a better off-topic thread.

Forgot to respond before - thank you so much for this.
