older games in tate on consoles
I'm interested in console ports of shooters made for the arcade before the 32-bit era-- specifically, ports that have a tate option. My favorite examples:
twin cobra, etc. (PS1)
xevious (PS1)
gun.smoke (Saturn)
contra (PS2)
I'm enjoying these more than modern shmups lately. Please let me know what else is available.

shouldn't be toooooo hard to complete a list with the help of the fellow shumpers here...sideshow wrote:If only there was a wiki that showed all the console shmups that support TATE.
if a moderator would just open up a thread on this topic and keeps it updated (like the highscore-threads) when someone adds a tate-game that he knows of...
could look something like this (these are the games that I can positivly add to the list):
Games in Tate on Consoles
GC
.
.
.
DC
Castle of Shikigami 2
Gunbird 2
Ikaruga
Karous
Psyvariar 2
Radilgy
Trigger Heart Exelica
Trizeal
Under Defeat
PS1
1942
1943
1943 Kai
Assault
Commando
Dragon Spirit
Exed Exes
Gun Smoke
Mercs
Strikers 1945 II
Vulgus
Xevious
PS2
.
.
.
Saturn
.
.
.
XBOX
.
.
.
etcetc.
wouldn't take to long for us I guess

Sonic Wings = Aero Fighters? I don't know if Sengoku Ace is 'old' enough to meet your criteria, but it's pretty similar to that. It's on one of the Psikyo collections, and standalone as Samurai Aces, the latter probably PAL only. Finding the PAL version for under $10 shouldn't be hard, but shipping might make it not worthwhile (don't know where you are). It has a somewhat emu-on-console, as opposed to port, feel (you have to insert coins, and everything), but it does include tate and a pretty good stage select.

This weekend I discovered another excellent addition to the list:
Galaga (US PS1, Namco Museum vol. 1)
You can also play PacMan in tate with this, but playing in tate mode with this is definitely a pain for me because I had to rotate in the opposite direction from the usual one and I have a tv dedicated to tate mode.

I think all the original Namco Museum releases with tate-able games are guilty of this.professor ganson wrote:

Some other early games playable in tate are Terra Cresta and Moon Cresta for PS2 (and Scramble and Time Pilot too).

it's even worse here: i have a monitor that i can easily tate in both directions - but after checking just now i found out that Namco Museum (with Galaga & PacMan) for the Dreamcast has no tate modeprofessor ganson wrote:[...], but playing in tate mode with this is definitely a pain for me because I had to rotate in the opposite direction from the usual one and I have a tv dedicated to tate mode.

Yeah, I bought the PS2 version a while back and it too lacks a tate option, I believe. Getting the PS1 version was worth it because I'm a pretty big Galaga fan.lewisit wrote:it's even worse here: i have a monitor that i can easily tate in both directions - but after checking just now i found out that Namco Museum (with Galaga & PacMan) for the Dreamcast has no tate mode

I picked up Sonic Wings and Terra Cresta for PS2 (Hamster releases).
Sonic Wings is so nice in tate. The controls are perfect and the game looks good. Highly recommended.
Terra Cresta for PS2 is a bit more puzzling. There seem to be three screen options, none of which are tate. One stretches across the entire screen, another is closer to square, and the last is quite narrow (vertical). The last one is a nice yoko version, but it seems like they could have easily added a tate version.
The game seems great, but these screen options are odd to me. So what form would the arcade original have taken?
