London Meet V (Aug 10th to 12th + extra days)

Post by LUNardei »

Oh yes, I'll be in London for a peaceful vacation from August 10th to 17th, and of course I'd like to meet you all again guys. I have already confirmed that week (shmupsmeet or not) because it's the perfect one for me in August, so please if you are interested try to make it for that week ^__^
In a few days I should be able to confirm 1/2 special guests, so stay tuned for that!

I'll stay at the Barryhouse again, but this time I won't arrange rooms for everyone (sorry, it's quite stressful :P). Anyway, these guys are extremely cool, talk with them as soon as you can:

See you all soon :D

I'll get the arcade ready for you guys as usual.
Hopefully we'll install something new for this Meet, Futari or something...

We're a bit worried about the Mushihimesama cabinet. It looks like they are taking it out of the arcade. The loss of a vert screen cab would leave only 2 good vert screens in the whole arcade. Bob is away on holiday, I will update you when he gets back.
Ketsui and Dodonpachi are still in.
New gaming laws for the benefit of the new megacasinos might be passed in September. This could also lead to the closing of the arcade (general rumour).
Masamune and I both agree that we need a wealthy benefactor to step in, should the unthinkable occur...
Problem is, there aren't any that we can think of.

Its just that I go stir crazy at home. I prefer an arcade social setting.
Plus I haven't got the room for cabs at home :D .

----------------------

LUNardei - We're still in the dark about the mush cab. The cash door is open and the decals are gone. Either the arcade is taking it out, or its been stolen. Last time a PCB was stolen in that arcade was in the late 80s.
Really not sure right now :?: I'll update ASAP.

That sounds fun, maybe I'd like to come too :O !

However why is mushihime sama always running away from me :'( !!!
I badly want to play it but it's nowhere to be found around here, and I still don't own a japanese PS2.

I'm kinda shocked. I'm able to play only mushi at the moment, the lack of it would be quite embarassing, and of course a bad news for the arcade and for the local players.
Hell yeah, the arcade social setting is something indeed special.

Damn, that doesn´t sound to good. :(
We should get the shmup meets on a regular basis if just to support the casino arcade (hell I´ll even toss in a few coins in one of the fighter cabs...). :)
Shame I don´t have the money to support places like this atm. Even if in the end you´d be losing out this is a thing that (no matter how small) should be preserved outside Japan as well.

August is too early for me (already have the weekend of the 16th and folloing of from work to go visit the Lowlands festival. And in this period I can´t permit myself to get another weekend or part of the week of for recreational purposes. :(

Have a few weeksoff in September/october though and will try to make time for a visit then. It´s been too long since the last time anyway... ;)

Ok here's the deal; recently posted by hatchet187;
Heres the full lowdown on Sept. 1st. On 1/9/07 the gambling act of 2005 comes into effect. What this essentially means is that arcades are screwed...bigtime. Over the last couple of years the whole face of the arcade industry has changed, due to the influx of section 16 machines. These are the 500 jackpot m/cs that you see in arcades now. Whilst these m/cs have brought lots of money into arcades, they have also alienated a lot of players and have also taken a lot of money away from casinos, which is something that the government seems keen to address(thank you very much "sir Rupert F**king Murdoch")

So as of 1st September, section 16 games become illegal. To replace these the government has "kindly" allowed arcades to have 4 category B3 m/cs, which are still 500 jackpot but are limited to £1 stake. I dont know how many Section 16 m/cs they have in Casino, but im guessing its way more than 4.

The loss of revenue to arcades is going to be devestating to say the least, and along with the smoking ban and all the other aspects of the gambling act(self banning, DCMS,3 extra licences) I wouldn't be surprised if you see most arcades disappearing forever.
This could be the death knell for small arcades in the UK....and soon

That's sad :[

Arcades seem already almost 100% dead in France and Spain, would be sad to see it happen in UK too.

About this meet in London, I should be able to come but I'm looking for a place that is cheaper than the BarryHouse ^_^
Do you British guys know the address of a Guest House or something similar around there ?

PROMETHEUS - You're more than welcome. Finding a place cheaper than the Barryhouse may be possible, but remember that London is one of the most expensive cities on Earth. A London Meet is best enjoyed with as much ca$h in your pocket as possible.

Yeah, I'm prepared to spend some ca$h but £40 per night just for a place to sleep is a lot. I'd probably like to stay a bit longer too, like 1 week, since it's been soooo long I haven't been in London and would like to explore, so 40*7 = £280 = no way ^^

In France we have those places called "Auberge de Jeunesse" in most cities (would translate to "Youth Inn" or something similar), they're really really cheap compared to regular hotels, and they simply offer a bed in a room with other people I think, + free breakfast maybe. Anything like that in London ?

Youth hostels? Yep, there are some in London. Can't remember any names off the top of my head, however. Check expedia.co.uk for a few names.

I don't know if I can make it this time. I have a lot of things to sort out for this September over the summer. I'd be nice to see everyone again, and if I can make it I will, but until I know more of my summer schedule, I'll be unavailable, assumed busy.

If in search of a youth hostel in london, you have to book quite a long time in advance.
