The juvenile attitude and sexist opinions of many of the men I have met in the gaming community are what keep women away from the scene, not a lack of interest. The posts in this thread are an example of both why women might feel like that cannot be involved in the gaming community and why many would feel that games are "for nerds" who have no social skills and a inability to speak to women as human beings.

And some people can't recognize humor. We are playing jokes off of jokes. We are making fun of the jokes about girl's not playing games. I won't oppose you calling us juvenile, hell, I'm only 16, but saying that we have sexist opinions is stupid. I haven't seen a single sexist comment on here that wasn't a blatent joke.

Besides, we can't be that bad if there are 4 women on here already. Considering how niche this genre is, that's probably not a bad number.

I don't think it's the case that a lot of women want to play video games but don't because of the men acting like dorks. I think most women just don't like video games that much. If they did they would play video games regardless of what the men think. And there are some that do. But the main reason that most gamers are male is because most women don't like video games from the get-go. It's not about content either, or we would see more women playing games like The Sims. The fact is that most women would rather do something else, like watch TV, read, talk on the phone or whatever. The majority of men don't play video games either, but there are a lot more men than women playing the games. It has more to do with what is considered masculine or feminine in our society, and what we learn about the world growing up, than what somebody says around us when we are already grown up. It's not like there is some kind of KKK trying to kick women out of games.

General gaming? Yeah. Shmups? I doubt that. Never seen a/s/l asked on any board about this stuff. The registration on here doesn't ask a gender, there's next-to-zero online play, voice chat, and no green high score list puts a "M" "F" label next to the numbers. Most if not all top scoring players come with brains so discrimination isn't gonna happen here.

Get your alias on some scoreboards, no matter what places and you're already more legit than a sizable chunk of the forum. Shit, even just choosing to run a scoreboard thread makes you pretty cool by default.

This community still rallies around the interest first, the people second. If a woman was truly interested in this gaming genre, there should be no discriminating barriers of entry to here whatsoever. The regulars here are not going to give a shit of a username's gender announcement; their follow-up question is going to be more like "so what's your score in ____?"

This genre could use more women. There's too many shmups tailored toward their direction anyway.

I think it's more hyperbole than actual stereotypes. So it's just a race to who can pull the non-PC card first really. This stuff is kinda silly anyways. Why aren't there more girl drag racers? Why aren't there more guys who love knitting? Mind makeups are different depending on gender, certain stimuli are more apt to cause a positive affect, etc. All about more of this or that chromosome, you know the deal. Probably why some guys feel the need to crossdress.

yeah, that's they way it works on most predominantly male forums and other groups. nothing wrong with that, but people often fail to realize what a big difference that is with the way people treat eachother in predominantly female forums and groups, where no-one is a target, unless they pissed someone off real bad (and then it's fierce bitching with no fun involved until one side doesn't get up anymore).

if you're not used to a culture of snarky comments and friendly ridicule and wander into a predominantly male forum because you like, say, shmups, then initially you may think "why does everyone here hate eachother? i better keep my mouth shut or they'll hate me too...". cause without non-verbal clues, it can be hard for the inexperienced to figure out how serious a comment is. there's a reason why predominantly female forums are infested with emoticons. ~_^

but it's quite a barrier! it's invisible from the inside (guy: "what's your problem?") and usually misinterpreted from the outside (girl: "you are all mean sexist pigs!".

i don't know if any of that applies to Kogepan, but i've seen it happen. a bit of patience and tolerance and explanations like DJ's tend to help a lot.

Hi Glitch and thank you. I think you know what I am trying to say. The point I was trying to get across was the way women perceive what you are saying and the way it would make them feel. Trust me, I “get” what you are saying. For 6 years I have worked in a predominantly male video games store and for about 4 of those years I was the only girl. At first I gave as good as I got, but it really does wear you down.

Being the minority means your voice and opinion often gets drowned out before it’s even really considered, which I feel is what has happened here. The attitude seems to be our way or the highway; there is no comprise. I don’t like cussing people back or making sexist jokes about men because it is completely counter-productive and a bit unbalanced seeing as most of you are men. I am not suggesting that you are all sexist and I am not on a soapbox demanding censorship. I am saying that the way you speak will determine the people who feel comfortable to join your forum and get involved. I didn’t post this just to piss people off, I promise!

I find that there is sometimes little practical difference between making a joke about or reference to something normally undesirable, as there are still generally two resulting groups: those that appeal to the joke or reality of the situation, and those that take offense. If people get too used to referencing a stereotype and start to do so all the time, then what difference does it make whether or not they're serious? Of course, this is a very polarized point of view, and in general it's possible to reach a happy medium.

Of the "male-oriented" (I'm guessing) communities that I've seen, this community seems to reach that medium the closest, with its roster of varied personalities which are generally very courteous.

I'm not going against any of the arguments mentioned in previous posts, they are all noted and acknowledged. My positive example above is perhaps even beside the issue, but this topic is one in a thousand that wouldn't have a place for things like that referee picture... certainly there are occasionally other potentially distasteful instances, but hopefully overall it is agreeable.

I also personally do my best to treat everyone (in real life or on the Internet) with respect and courtesy, as well as to keep an open mind in all situations. The first thing that came to mind when this current debate arose, though, is drinking milk as beer. ^_~

HELL NO!

She spent more than 10 credits to complete it, but she presented some pretty interesting manoeuvres which I never thought possible for someone that had never played a shooter before, let alone a girl!
I've never seen anyone using those sinister green laser blasts so satisfyingly, (her recharge/unleash timings were excellent) she fell in love with the fire power!
So, much that she even completed the 2nd loop as well!

but we're all dying to know whether ST Dragon turned the ESP.Ra.De girl into a hardcore shmup fan yet!

Well, so far we completed together the following shooters:

1. Mushihimesama, - PS-2, which she liked for the nicely hand drawn levels / enemy sprites and the cool music.
She especially liked the 3rd level butterfly Boss, with the florescent wings.

2. Shienryu - PS-2 (2 loops)

3. ESP. Ga.Lu.Da. – PS-2 (She concluded that the fire power in ESP.Ra.De was more devastating!)

4. DoDonPachi – MAME (Like ESP.Ra.De she liked the heavy fire power and fast/simple gameplay.

5. Raiden Project – PS-1 (She liked Raiden 2 more because of the Purple Snake Plasma Beam, but greatly enjoyed the music of both games)

6. Raiden III – PS-2 (She got bored half way through)

7. Psyvariar II – PS-2 (She loved the music, but found the gameplay a bit complicated…

I can’t say if she’s turned into a hard core shooter, but she really liked the genre.
Basically, what will really attract her in a shooter is the extensive use of heavy fire power, cool music and fast paced/simple gameplay.

Next, I’ll show her a few horizontal Shooters, Parodius series, Thunder Force III & V come to mind.
Any other propositions?
