Never noticed that the PS2 version was canceled. Wasn't it supposed to be released after Kiki KaiKai 2 ?

As far as I can tell at least KKKK2 is still on track from StarFish, though no exact release in known yet.

Have there ever been screenshots to the PS2 version of Shin Chuka Taisen ?

I think StarFish will release this as well as Kiki KaiKai 2, don't know why it goes for Wii. But as the name says, it will have co-op mode. I hope it won't be like 3D shooter.

here's a link, only the title's revealed for now

Out of curiosity, when it was canned for the PS2, did it have something to do with S-E cutting Taito's budget/project for bringing in less than stellar profits?

I did not read that it got canned... just heard it announced, and never, ever anything after that. Anyways, terrible news indeed that it's going to the Wii.

A pic of the Wii version is up at the-magicbox:

Looks good, very super famicom-y. No way this will see the light of day outside of Japan looking like that, however.

That's what I was afraid of. Looks like I'm shelling out on a Japanese Wii after all.

I hope this gets the ball rolling for other shmup developers. (eg: Cave/Arika and their eternal "The PS2 is too slow" dramas).

It looks about 10-times better than SFC. Presumably all high-res anyway.

I saw this on magicbox also, I'm pretty interested. There was suppose to be a sequal to pocky and rocky on PS2 in high res according to insert credit but I have heard nothing more on that..
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

The look reminds me a bit of the GBA Steel Empire, also from Starfish. I wonder if some of the same staff is working on it.

Is that the only screenshot that's out? I like the original, so this is interesting to me.

WTF? Are we looking at the same pic? Compare:

Shin Chuka Taisen (Wii):

Seiken Densetsu 3 (Super Famicom):

I rest my case (I actually think SD3 looks BETTER, but whatever).

There were new scans on Ruliweb I posted up on my site.

I know I'm a bit critical of the scans so far, but I really am not impressed. :(

If you are unimpressed due to it so far being graphically underwhelming, then I agree. Thing is, gameplay trumps in shmups, in any game really. Until I play it, or don't, cautious optimism. :)

Then again, the original wasn't the most advanced horizontal shmup on the planet at the time of its release back in 1988. And, frankly, it's probably not for everyone...especially so if the style of play is faithful to the original. I like the idea of taking old games like this and giving them an updated finish. This was something Hudson really did well with the Bonk and Adventure Island updates on PS2/GC...and Nintendo did on GC with LOZ: Four Swords Adventures. Graphics whores probably hated those titles with a passion...but graphics NEVER make the game. While it's nice to have decent graphics (preferably of the 2D variety)...nothing can ever touch solid, addictive gameplay. Personally, I'd be happy if every new release looked like a SFC game.

I'm not a graphic whore by any means, but I do have a certain level of expectation when it comes to graphics for console releases. I understand the desire to maintain the feel of the game's predecessor, but if you look at how far 2D and sprite animation has progressed with the power of a system such as the Wii it just seems to be a crying shame to not want to tap into that and really push the limits of 2D work.

But I'm holding off further judgment until I see the game in motion. Perhaps I'm going to be blown away by the animation or something.

No matter what I'll be picking the game up on release because I love a shooter, and let's face it, graphics are never the strongest aspect of most shooters. I just wish that developers even with these "retro" revisits would take a bit more effort with their work especially after seeing stuff like Odin Sphere.

Wow, and I remember when Airforce Delta Storm looked insanely realistic.

Ace Combat 6 looks, er, "stonkin."

These other games are looking damn promising too.

Is Kiki KaiKai 2 for reserve anywhere yet? Any clue how much it will cost?

I already have mine preordered through NCS. Starfish has the price listed on their site as 6,090 Yen. Most folks would probably think that's a bit steep for what you're getting, but it's OK by me.

^ Lame gimmick alert! Lame gimmick alert!

You tilt the Wiimote right side down to make the stages scroll faster. To make them go slower, tilt the Wiimote right side up.

It looks sort of interesting, but I don't have a Wii so I'll have to pass on it.

New update on the official site including how the controls work:

http://www.s-f.co.jp/soft/wii/newchuka/index.htm

The control scheme is better than I thought it would be. You use the Wiimote NES style, just tilting it left or right to speed up or slow down. No waving it around or slashing it in the air to attack. It would be nice to have the option to use the upcoming Hori stick (and assigning speed up/down to buttons on that stick). The game has been delayed until August 30th (from August 2nd), so perhaps they may toss this feature in.

In any case, the game looks fun and I'll be picking it up when it's released, as long as it doesn't get horrendous reviews.

Game looks like it may be coming to the United States by way of UFO Interactive:

http://www.gamefly.com/products/detail. ... Search?-?-

UFO Interactive has published a couple of Starfish games in the past in the US, so it makes sense in a way.

As another random side note, Kai Kai World also popped up on Gamefly as being published for the Wii in the US by UFO Interactive as well... I know after Kiki Kai Kai was cancelled for the PS2 a lot of rumors started murmuring that the game had moved to Wii development, so it would be interesting to see if Kai Kai World is actually this "new" Kiki Kai Kai for the Wii.

Gamefly has a tendency of "breaking" stories of games being released here before they are officially announced. They did it with Guilty Gear for the Wii before the Wii port of the game was even mentioned by Arc System Works (let alone Aksys - the US publishers).

They must have a huge spy network of ninjas working behind the scenes to get the information they update their games listings with.
