Style. The tendency to use lifebars. Multiple hits before going down. Common ideas in so-called Euro-shmups that generally aren't well recieved. Shmups with anything other than one-hit-kills tend to throw unavoidable patterns at you that force you to minimize damage rather than avoid it. I'm sure you can think of a few examples off the top of your head. That said, this isn't always the case. The Coop wrote:And this differs from a "Japano-Shmup" how?Damocles wrote:Because if they're not done properly they come off as sloppy. Well, I can just as easily name plenty of Japanese shmups with questionable style, collision detection, and seemingly just as unavoidable enemy and bullet patterns. For every one Euro-Shmup with issues, there's at least one Japanese shmup with issues (likely more since Japanese shmups far out number European ones). But as I'm sure others would back me up on, those bad Japanese shmups aren't held over the "heads" of the good Japanese shmups. Most people don't liken Gradius Gaiden to XDR just because they might share a similar style or trait. So why do such a thing with Euro-Shmups?Damocles wrote:Style. The tendency to use lifebars. Maybe because the "bad" Euro-Shmups outweigh the "good" ones? I don't know if that's the case, but it's an idea. Since I don't personally like the stereotypical Euro styling, probably because I'm not a huge fan of most horzies, I can't say.The Coop wrote:Well, I can just as easily name plenty of Japanese shmups with questionable style, collision detection, and seemingly just as unavoidable enemy and bullet patterns. Personally, I can't stand most Western-developed shmups. Many seem clunky, and most put visuals first and gameplay last. Hell, look at Jets 'n Guns. I think it's great to look at, though it has the computer lifelessness look to it, but I think it's a sub-par game. Just my opinion.

I gotta say, I really love this game so far. normally I utterly detest pre-rendered graphics, but this game does it WELL. besides that, it takes me back to Stargunner and Raptor, both which I absolutely adored. (as for issues with the style and easiness, Raptor's hardest difficulty drove me insane because it was literally throwing everything at you by the third level. that goes for especially for it's other 3 episodes.) I actually may get gold version later if I have the time to.

It's nice that he/she/they are offering it as a free game. I'm not going to claim that the game is bad since it's basically charity. I just wish the enemies didn't get fully across the screen with constant fire before blowing up. Many times I had to literally fire on an object until it blew up pixels away from ramming my plane to death. Also some parts almost demand you take damage. I personally didn't care for this concept. Also it seems that they tried to build on the shmup genre and just ended up adding more complications. It's a great looking game and it's nice for people to give it away if only for a day. I can see that a lot of time and effort went into this work but some parts are still a bit unbalanced in my opinion.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

The file was over 70M, so your download was cut off for whatever reason.Dave_K. wrote:Crap, I downloaded it on that day to save, but never tried installing it. Looked at the zip file right now and its a 39M corrupted file!? wtf?
For the people who weren't in time for the offer: rest assured you aren't missing out on anything aside from cool music.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Some of us would say the opposite... that they did miss out on getting a good game.Ghegs wrote:The file was over 70M, so your download was cut off for whatever reason.Dave_K. wrote:Crap, I downloaded it on that day to save, but never tried installing it. Yeah, J'n'G may not appeal to shmup purists but it has tons of small gimmicks to keep the player occupied. The chaotic designs (especially the weapon combinations) of euro-shmups sometimes produce a varied gameplay unlike most of the j-shmups that are very dogmatic and even-quality.The Coop wrote:
