I just want to know if this game is worth getting. It's fairly inexpensive at the moment. I want to get it for my Saturn, but I don't know anything about it, nor have I been able to find any reviews for it or replay vids. I've seen a few screenshots here and there. But that's it.
If you guys can give me your quick impressions on it, it would be really helpful to me.
gameplay is off and it just feels uninspired to me.
if youre expecting something along the lines of garegga you better think again.
if you want a raizing-esq experience for the saturn outside of garegga you can always pic up its inspiration "Gun frontier"
before you get kingdom GP there are atleast 50 better shmups for the saturn...
the destruction of everything, is the beginning of something new. your whole world is on fire, and soon, you'll be too..
Hell yeah. Try it in Mame first, though. Keep in mind that it's damn easy, especially if you don't race. ...that kind of defeats the purpose, however. The one thing that the game has in spades is atmosphere. Nearly each and every level has a ton of detail in the backgrounds. Go for it.
...and the Saturn rev. has "Shooting Mode" too...if you're not thrilled by racing.
Considering you can pick this game up for £10 on ebay over here in the UK I would suggest giving it a try. It's a good rizing title but not the best but it does have some nice little touches to it like the whole racing mechinic.
Kingdom Grandprix's whole shtick is that it's a mix between a shooter and a racer, so during the game you won't just be shooting, but also trying to get ahead of the other characters. Hanging out in the upper 3rd of the screen or holding shot will make you go faster, and you can also attempt to knock or bomb your opponents out of the race. In the middle of each stage you'll have to fight a boss and usually watch as all the other contestants zip right past you (as they conveniently don't have to deal with a boss -_-" ).
The game's presentation is nice, but personally, I don't think the game racing innovation works to well or is so much fun. Overall it's probably one of Raizing's weakest shooters. Don't buy it just because it's cheap. It makes more sense to shell out more for something like Battle Garegga, which is also a lot better game.
I'd say go for it, only if you already have most Saturn shooters and need something new, or if you're a diehard Mahou and/or Raizing fan. Otherwise, get a different game first.
As Damocles said, try it in MAME: the presentation is indeed nice (gotta love the vampire at the end of stage 3), but the racing mechanic is, to say the very least, not to everyone's tastes, and the shooting portion of the game is very simple. Though the fact that it's cheap doesn't hurt.

That's pretty much the position I'm in right now. I don't exactly own every single shmup in the Saturn library. But I do own at least 20 of them (never bothered to count them). So, what the hell. I have some cash to burn anyway. Might as well just add it to my library.
I just bought a complete w/spine copy from a friend for $30 shipped. And I'm about to buy Gekirindan later on too. I've been wanting to try that one as well. The soundtrack alone is awesome.
I thank all of you who posted. Your opinions are appreciated.
I liked it. It's got some astoudingly cool bosses and interesting level design. The racing part of it adds a lot of substance, despite what people say. And you can choose your path through the game's levels. My biggest complaint is the complete lack of balance between the characters. Sadly, Miyamoto is king, end of story.
I host the high score thread, so if you get some good scores, make sure to post them.
I use Boornam, but that doesn't mean he's better than Miyamoto. You should post on the high score thread then! Scores with any other character aside from Miyamoto would be a nice change.
I'm enjoying it. It's a really fun game. I love the style of the graphics, and the music is really cool. I've only played it for about 10 minutes, so I haven't explored it's full potential just yet. But all in all, Iam very happy, and satisfied with my purchase.
