Top 3 Kenta Cho games.

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

Ok what are your top 3 Kenta Cho games?
Mine are (from favorite to least)

Parsec47
Noiz2sa
rRootage (changed)

I'm not a huge fan of the non traditional games such as Gunroar or Torus Trooper, but they are really well done nontheless.

Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

I like his traditional stuff but I'm always looking for new flavours :)

1. Tumiki Fighters - there's something extremely satisfying about controlling a huge monster of a ship made out of scrap
2. Gunroar - extremely cool boss battles...just love to steer through the bullets first in order to shoot at the boss from above
3. rRootage - cool boss battles once again...and a load of different modes

Tumiki Fighters - The most complete game, with proper levels, very original scoring system - this could SO be a proper console release!

rRootage - I spend a lot of time playing it, and it showcases many great bullet patterns from many modern manic shmups. Too bad the scoring sucks, which makes it more of a "dodge trainer".

Torus Troopers - Never played it for too long, but it is simply stunning to look at.

Torus Troopers is #1 by a mile

mu-cade is pretty damned excellent.

For third place I think I'm going with Tumiki Fighters.

TUMIKI Fighters
Parsec47
Rrootage

TF has rank based on the pieces you have attached. It makes things interesting on scoring runs when you want to milk those bosses.

Parsec and Rrootage don't have jacked up mechanics.

Noiz2sa and Titanion have really jacked up bullet destroying mechanics, torus trooper has a lame bullet destroying charge shot, gunroar is weird with the screen pushing, and even worse on scoring runs. Haven't played the others.

1. Tumiki Fighters
2. A7Xpg
3. Noiz2sa

A7Xpg would be my favorite if it didn't give out extra lives so generously. :(

1. Noiz2sa
2. rRootage
3. Tumuki Fighters

All of them are amazing in their own little ways.

My least favorite is probably Gunroar, though.

While some think that having infinate levels is pointless, I see it as an endless challange. I really like randomly generated games personally.

1. Parsec47 - good level of randomness and not broken. I can play it for days and days.
2. rRootage - haven't touched it in ages, but best patterns by far.
3. a7Xpg - hard to choose #3. It's just very unique and well realized. I'm not very good at it, but I like it a bunch.

1. Parsec 47
No shmup, ever, has given me what parsec47 does: adrenaline rush all the way through and constant struggle for survival combined with gameplay that enables me to always being able to make it and even get a new high score.

2. Tumiki Fighters
A tad weird when playing for really high scores, but game mechanics that nontheless are one of the coolest I've ever seen.

3. rRootage
The bullet patterns are really nice, although the slowdown never made it easy to enjoy for me.

I'm beginning to rethink my #3. It might be Parsec47 or Titanion.

1. Torus Trooper. The best high speed action I've ever seen, so exhilarating that I find it easier at maximum speed than at medium speed.
2. rRootage. BulletML at its best.
3. I play the others more sporadically, the only one I like less is Mu-cade (I prefer being hit rather than falling off the edge).

I played other games of his, but I find Noiz2sa very entertaining.
Does your controller have a button to switch the pad and stick controls? Mine does. Most defualt controls work for the stick but with the press of a button they flip and it works on the pad.

I also have a 360 pad and use this little tool:

Don't forget to tick "Use POV switches" under "Others" because that's your dpad.

1. Parsec47
Unmatched speed and intensity, and I like how you have to figure everything out on the fly every time you play the game. Aside from the occasional bullet cloud of unfairness, I wouldn't change a thing about this game.

2. Gunroar
I liked the twinstick mechanic in Smash TV (and Robotron, although I haven't played much Robotron), but Gunroar is a lot more shmuppy. I also like how you can control the rank/multiplier by how aggressively you play, simply brilliant. Normally I hate shmups where you interact with the scenery, but I really like the islands in this game. Probably because you use them to your advantage, not crash into them and die like in most hori shmups.

3. Torus Trooper
I love how this game is ridiculously fast, yet not really manic. It took awhile for me to really get the hang of it, but once I did it became a lot of fun.

Titanion is cool, but it loses points for having an unbalanced scoring system and not being random (at least in Modern mode, I haven't messed with Classic).

I didn't care for Mucade or Noiz2a. Mucade isn't dodgy enough for my tastes, and I don't like Noiz2sa's sketchy hit detection. I haven't spent too much time with either of those, though, so I could just be missing something.

I haven't really played too much of the older stuff, so I can't say much about those. I should give them a spin sometime.

Are you sure you're not just mistaking the fact that whenever one of those green bars of the 'cage' is over your hitbox you're invincible for sketchy hit detection?

Yeah, I remember you mentioning that in the score thread. Using the cage as a shield seems like it would require superhuman timing, so it can't be used with any kind of confidence. Any time I rely on it to get out of a situation, I know it's basically a crap shoot. If it protects me, I feel lucky. If I die, I feel cheated. Never do I feel any sense of accomplishment.

Maybe my timing is just exceptionally bad, and it's perfectly capable of being used consistently. Either way, it turns me off to the game.

I don't think it's supposed to be used like that. I sure don't. I think it's just an extra layer of security since you don't have any bombs or secondary fire. I don't feel cheated when I die since I don't think about the cage being there. If I live then I just chalk it up to 'skillz' and I feel good about myself.

Having a shield that may or may not protect you isn't technically bad hit detection, but it has the same effect. I don't want to get a high score because I won at Russian Roulette more often than usual.

1-Tumiki
2-Titanion
3-rRootage

But, Gunroar, Noiz2sa and Parsec 47 are up there aswell. It's too hard to choose from just three :(. Torus Trooper was okay, but got a little boring. Same for MuCade.

1. Parsec47 - I've played this game a lot for days and days, cause of random bullet dodging and other variety.

2. Torus Trooper - Sort of like Tempest, but with much better look. :)

3. Noiz2sa - Not much to say, but I like it still.
