Tiny Phalanx
Tiny Phalanx
Some of you probably know Phalanx on the SNES. It's not the best side-scroller but it's ok. Anyway, what a lot of you might not know is that there's a mediocre PS1 3D fighter called Zero Divide. Hidden on the disc is a full game entitled Tiny Phalanx, which appears to be a sequel or remake to the original. It has some minor 3D graphics and looks like a PS1 shooter, basically. Is it the best? No. It's very fun though, and I'm really enjoying it. Imagine a side scrolling Soldier Blade...or something like that. Much better than the 3D fighter advertised on the cover of the box! If you have the game Zero Divide (or want to try renting/buying it; it'll be cheap) and want to play Tiny Phalanx, just hold down start and select on the 2nd controller while the game boots up. It'll load up Phalanx! I'm not sure how long it is as I'm still working on beating the stage 2 boss, but the levels are fairly lengthy and very well made.
I'm wondering if anyone else has ever played this or heard of it.

A lot of you probably know the original Phalanx for the famous cover art: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Phalanxart.jpg

I laughed so hard when I saw that.kengou wrote:A lot of you probably know the original Phalanx for the famous cover art: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Phalanxart.jpg
"You are the Hero of Tomorrow!"
Tiny Phalanx is similar in terms of the powerups to the SNES version in the video, but it features 1-hit kills (in the original you can take several hits before dying), as well as a single bomb type (the original had different bombs depending on the weapon you used) that is somewhat unique among shmups (to my knowledge) in that it creates a large temporary blast radius which destroys any enemies who fly into it and makes you invincible while inside it.
Re: Tiny Phalanx
blasphemy!, zero divide is about as fine a 3D fighter as they come, i have alot of fond memories from playing the piss out of it when it was released.kengou wrote: Anyway, what a lot of you might not know is that there's a mediocre PS1 3D fighter called Zero Divide. .
tiny phalanx is only 3 stages that loop infinitley if my memory serves me right..
the destruction of everything, is the beginning of something new. your whole world is on fire, and soon, you'll be too..
Heh, I bought a disc-only Zero Divide just for Tiny Phalanx. It was fun enough considering the price I paid for it, I think I looped it three times before either dying or just getting bored with it.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Re: Tiny Phalanx
I want to bring this thread back because I've been playing Tiny Phalanx again. I'm really loving it! I just reached 3-2 with a score of 6,267,160. Loop 3 is where it really starts getting difficult. In loop 1 and 2, if you get the rank high enough there will be suicide bullets, but only then. In loop 3, there's ALWAYS suicide bullets. Also, they're faster than the normal ones in loop 1 and 2, I think.
After looping the game, when you get a game over, it pops up a screen full of japanese text and the words "Tiny Phalanx 2: Revenge of [something japanese]". Anyone know what this screen means? Was there a sequel made or planned?

"I think Ikaruga is pretty tough. It is like a modern version of Galaga that some Japanese company made."
