Me too, my wife just got them for my birthday. LOTS of stuff that was missing in the original TV broadcast, which I find interesting.

I've been enjoying their more experimental stuff lately - really digging on Rubber Soul & Revolver, as well as listening to all of Sgt. Pepper yesterday & today. I'm working on Magical Mystery Tour right now :D

As said before, finally jumping into jazz full-throttle, and by that I mean the pre-craziness of free jazz (which I love) but instead the more standard-based, traditional sort (which I suppose isn't really so traditional.)

Of late, finally busted into the pre-impulse Coltane (knew 'my favorite things' and 'african brass')--the atlantic and prestige boxes both seem rather rewarding to me. While the prestige period is very often written off as 'embryonic', what it achieves in textures is really warming to my ear. Indeed, the Atlantic box seems almost over-produced in comparison (and this is where the classic 'trane' is supposed to start.) For its low price (something like $40 for six discs), I feel like the prestige box is worth it, though it isn't so much about the songs but rather about the process. I dug it anyway.

The atlantic box on the other hand is gold. 6 discs of music covering something like 10 releases, plus a bonus outtakes disc. It is really hard NOT to enjoy this material, though there is a note of dissapointment: Ultimately you will end up at the impulse set, and while 'classic', it neither shares the rather adventurous (if non-descript) nor the grandeur of the impulse work. I'm thrilled I picked this one up, but in being good, it is still not 'A love supreme'. Sometimes, being in the middle is the hardest thing to do. Still really really great and should be in the hands of any of you like-minded folks.

I've also been working my way through Davis's Cellar Door Sesssions, but not sure I can wholly recommend them yet, especially given the high price tag.

Recently dipped into

Artie Shaw - Begin The Beguine 10cd box set
Sonny Rollins - Sax Symbol 4cd box set featuring most of his 50s albums
John Coltrane - Fearless Leader 6cd box set - formative my arse, great material here, although as CMoon said, it ain't A Love Supreme
The Fall - Shift Work - a new reissue with some nice bonus stuff.
Joanna Newsom - everything. The woman is pure musical bliss

And a shameless plug:
If you fancy it check out my recently formed solo outfit, Srj. My first E.P. release is up for free download at www.myspace.com/srjstuartjewkes . It has been described as 'doom laden' and 'a big racket', and was created with a limited drum machine built in an effects box and my half destroyed guitar. And other bits here and there. Feedback would be appreciated.
Number of 1cc's : 5
Now playing: Gunbird

Are you much of a Basho fan? Venus in Cancer is not my favorite album by him, but I'm not a guitar player. To be honest, I love his cheesy hippy stuff. Zarthus is where its at for me, and he barely plays guitar on that one. Honestly, he let's it hang out SO FAR on that one, you either love it or hate it.

Also really recommend Voice of the Eagle and believe or not, there's a great one on Windam Hill (sp?)--who would of thunk? I do love Basho's stuff, but Venus in Cancer left me rather cold.

It's the first one I've heard and I like it. It's fitting my mood perfectly at the moment. I'll definitely be playing some others.

Oh for sure! Raekwon the Chef has great solo stuff and Cuban Linx is one of the best, with sic-ass GhostFace tracks.

Fishscale is nice too. Love DOOM's beats on that record.

I couldn't get into Fishscale or pretty toney or any of Rae's later albums for that matter. After Supreme Clientele I pretty much tuned out. Thats the thing about the early Wu solo albums and most early-mid nineties hip hop in general. It really was like capturing magic in a bottle.

I've been in a Megadeth mood the last couple days. United Abominations is pretty good, at least on par with The System Has Failed, and definitely a step in the right direction. Good solos!

Electric Six - Switzerland

Not only are they an awesome band, but they are from the Detoit area so I get the added bonus of supporting a local group. The only problem is they don't seem to have as much of a following here in the States as they do in the UK.
