I'm not sure (not owning the Saturn or PS versions). But hearing the comments from others above in this thread, it sounds like the same true last boss, but you don't have to go through two loops to get to him (lame). Given the relaxed requirements, he is most likely easier too.Dylan1CC wrote: So you can't get the true boss/ending if you own the home port? I still have yet to properly clear (major understatement) my Saturn DDP and DOJ.

I think you're referring to "Saturn Mode" on the (obviously) Saturn port: in this mode the game only lasts one loop and is a (on defaults) bit easier (and you can adjust extra options and such too, plus an extra level), plus the true final boss is at the end of said loop. I believe that this is the only mode wherein this applies, while Arcade mode on both the Saturn and PS1 ports work the same way as the original arcade game does.Dave_K. wrote:I'm not sure (not owning the Saturn or PS versions). Re: The greatness of DDP
Since DDP just won for the FIFTH year straight, I'm resurrecting this thread. Everybody who voted for DDP, tell me why. How can this one game continue to hang on to number one? And doesn't it deserve a proper US release? Seriously.doctorx0079 wrote:Okay, so far it has won the poll 4 years straight. Elaborate on what makes it so great.

Read the post I made when the thread first appeared, on the first page: my reasons remain the same.doctorx0079 wrote:Everybody who voted for DDP, tell me why. How can this one game continue to hang on to number one?
I certainly wouldn't protest, but seeing as the series has no name recognition whatsoever here, not to mention the state of western shmupping in general, it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that it'll never happen, same as with heaven knows how many other worthy shmup titles. And doesn't it deserve a proper US release? Seriously.

Yeah I agree on that.chtimi-CLA wrote:also here is one thing wrong about DDP, how it reuses stage music twice in each loop.
I would vote for DDP if I took part in the voting as well, because this game is very close to perfection in every field. It's level design is very superior, stages are beautiful and there are always enemies on screen, yet it never feels like it's just a constant homogeneous flow of bad guys coming at you, it has great variety.
While definitely being accessible to beginners, it's gameplay allows for incredible depth for serious gamers, with chaining and survival. Also, even though you're penalized fairly for dying, you still won't have your score divided by 5 just because you made a little mistake like in Guwange -.-
And the controls are incredibly smooth.
I like the music but I don't think it's a very strong point for Dodonpachi, it's nice but not really kick ass imo, the boss music especially isn't great.

DDP deserves the top spot on my list(and the SHMUPS list) simply because it checks every mark a shmup needs.
Easy to learn, pretty hard to master, graphically great, love the enemy design, always shooting and destoying, decent music that makes you feel like a badass fighter pilot, easy to understand scoring system thats actually very in-depth(chains, bees, max bombs, flowers, star medels, etc), a second loop of more difficult gameplay...I really can just go on.
Its proberly a top 15 game EVER, for me. Its that fucking good.

I respect DDP for what it is: A great starting point for Cave. It introduces:
-Small hitbox
-Lots of bullets
-Scoring
It does have issues though. Either of the two can be blamed on it's age, but:
-The whole bomb replenishing thing is weird
-Absolutely horribly music, all the way through
-Control lacks sensitivity, and they had yet to implement the "slow down when you hold down fire" thing. True, at the time, it wasn't an issue, but w/ hindsight, it makes it not so fun for me.
I don't think they got the control thing down well until Guwange if you ask me. I seem to run into bullets when I shouldn't in ESPRade as well.

^^ Even though I haven't played much more than 25 shmups I did play a lot of other games for a lot more than 30 min -.-Rob wrote:Play 1 more game for >30 min.PROMETHEUS wrote: Yeah, definitely agree with this. Top 15 game ever for me as well.
(just messin')
Shmups is actually not my favorite genre.
Well that's weird, because even after having played like 50 hours of guwange, esp ra de, cyver, blazing star... I always think to myself when coming back to DDP that it has the best control by far. So incredibly responsive somehow; and I usually dodge better in DDP than in other games because of that.GaijinPunch wrote:-Control lacks sensitivity, and they had yet to implement the "slow down when you hold down fire" thing. Batsugun Special Version... I guess that does predate DDP by a few months. Apples & Oranges though.Batsugun.
I 1CC'ed it last week w/ C-S. I am not firing laser for most of it, but it seems the exactly same speed...err... slowness in this case. Part of the reason I chose the already slow ship.Have you even played the game? Holding down fire slows the ship down. BTW worst mechanic ever.
Could be the hitbox playing tricks on me, but interms of weaving through bullets: Guwange > DDP > ESPRade. I go around that shit in ESPRade... it's the only way. Of course, playing anything recently and they all kind of suck if you ask me, but the boxes are presumably even smaller.because even after having played like 50 hours of guwange, esp ra de, cyver, blazing star... I always think to myself when coming back to DDP that it has the best control by far. So incredibly responsive somehow;
No.BTW worst mechanic ever.

my top 2 games EVER are Ketsui and Batrider, ive gotten more enjoyment out of those two than FF7, CSOTN or Probotector together.. am i strange?
ed: ontopic, i find DDP absoluteley obsolete, DOJ does everything it does but +1 imo?
even the quality of the port is better
