Shoot Em Ups, ESP.Ra.De & a Girl that likes them...

Post by ST Dragon »

The other day, this girl that I’ve been going out with for over a month, came over my house to see me as I was sick in bed with fever.

She asked me if she could try a game on my PC. Soon after she fired up Mame emulator and started playing ESP.Ra.De and to my surprise she was quite good at it too. It wasn’t long before she completed it and started a 2nd round on it!

Her favorite player was the little girl and what made her enjoy the game so much, as she said were the heavy fire power, the sinister green laser blasts that you unleash by holding down the 3rd power button and the cool background music.

I asked her if she had ever played a shoot em up before, but with the exception of various old-school FPS (Duke3D, Doom, Quake1, 2,) on her brother’s old PC and Sonic, Mario when she was younger, she had never tried this genre before.

Oh, and she’s neither fat nor ugly by the way! ;)

Her name is “Zafiroula” which means “Sapphire” in Greek.
I wonder if she will like the Homonymous PCE DUO shump? ;)

How interesting…

Good job finding a woman who loves the shooters, make sure you keep her, unless she has a hidden nagging side.

Gotta take the good with the bad, sometimes..... ^_~

For ST Dragon,

I'll bet this gal would love to try out the real ESP.ra.de arcade PCB deal over the Mame port any ol' day, right? ^_~

And do you have access to such an arcade ESP.ra.de PCB setup via Supergun or full-sized Japanese arcade cabinet? If not, now's a good time to take the shmup PCB plunge (if you can afford it). This particular setup will definitely win that gal "head over heels" on such a lucky stud like you..... ^_~

My word of advice: Do not pass her up, you might spend the rest of your life thinking what would've happened if I hadn't decided to "hook up" with that gal -- who knows, she could be your future life partner or wife (or just a good friend). ^_~

There are plently of more arcade shmups to introduce to her besides ESP.ra.de, y'know that right? ^_~

 :D Thanks for the advice.

How much would this specific setup cost?
I was thinking about getting a 1945 Strikers II PCB and cabinet.

As long as she doesn't start beating my scores & records in the shooters! ;)

I sure do!
DoDonPachi comes to mind, as she particularly likes shmups with great fire power.
I bet she'll like Mushihimesama too

besides myself? no. -_-;;
but i totally blame Mushi for making me buy a ps2 + all Cave ports. ^_^
i want to get a friend of mine to try it, but the opportunity has not presented itself yet. she quite liked the Reko figurine though. the Mushi-aesthetic is just a lot more girl-compatible than say, Dodonpachi. all that warfare jazz is pretty alienating to most of us (i mean, Dodonpachi is pretty amazing once you get into it, but for people without a WHOA FIGHTER JETS instinct it's just not as inviting)...

Over all cool design and I loved the After Burner Climax review.

You must be the only girl in this forum, let alone one of the few that likes shooters! ;)

Welcome aboard!

How long have you been playing shmups for and which one was the 1st that got you into the genre?
After all, it is an unusual genre for women, considering that most prefer Puzzle Bobble, Tetris, Sudoku, etc... ;)

Minzoku's our other resident gaming girl, but not sure how much she's into shmups.

I wonder where Fev and Alteka went...

I have a friend at my place of work that I've been introducing to shmups for the past couple of years. He really digs Viper Phase 1 and he just told me yesterday that his (9 or 10 year old) daughter started playing VP1 and she couldn't get enough of it. So I proceeded to point him in the direction of ESPrade and Guwange, to see if she would like the "character" themed shmups.

We'll see how it goes. I think it is a rare find to have the girls get into the shmup genre. I know plenty of women that play Halo. I guess we just have it in our heads that girls won't like shmups, but it may be that they just haven't been introduced to them enough!

I've tried to get my girlfriend to play shmups by showing her Mushi and Esprade, which she really liked because of the characters involved, but could not keep up with the fast paced manic shooting/dodging. Understanding she needed an easier introduction, I turned her onto Cosmo Gang, and she totally got hooked, to the point of being very competitive with me on score. I kinda feel like a drug pusher...she'll get there eventually! mwwahahahaha!
