Space Invaders DS - Anyone played this yet?

Post by DazTM »

Picked up the Japanese version from Play Asia and to be honest I'm not that impressed with it. Like many old games, the DS's touch screen is woefully underused and in classic mode it simply consists of a on-screen joystick that you move with the stylus (as you can't move and fire at the same time, it's set on auto-fire which is rubbish).

The new mode is several different styles of games and some of these are pretty decent. Here's what I've seen so far.

Narrow Invader - The play width is half the size of a normal game
Super Invader - Kill giant space invaders
Division Invader - Shooting white invaders divide them in two
Shadow Invaders - Invaders phase out and disappear for a few seconds
Million Invader - Tiny invaders that prove hard to kill as they're so small
Armoured Invader - One lone invader requires multiple hits to kill and it moves very fast
Direction Invader - You have to kill invaders in order without shooting any others
Invader Storm - Invaders chuck loads of bullets at you
Doppleganger - An old school space ship fires down at you from the top of the screen.

The touch screen has several weapons including barrier, support, rapid, stop and laser, but I've not worked out how to use them yet...

To be honest though, I'm not finding this new version very exciting and will probably swop it for the PSP collection as that appears to be much better.

Hmm... doesn't Space Invaders only allow 1 (or 2?) player shots onscreen at once. How are you supposed to time your shots with autofire. Is it still playable like that? Really there's no good reason why a player shouldn't just be able to remap the controls to manually fire with one of the many actual fire buttons on the DS.

If they can't even port friggin' Space Invaders to the DS properly they have serious management issues. :P

This one sounds interesting.
