Any SHMUPS announced for the PSP yet?

Post by jpolz »

Well?

I really want a good SHMUP to be available for it before I decide to buy one. If you think about it, SHMUPS would be perfect for a portable platform since you can play them for short, quick sessions.

Sengoku Cannon (Sengoku Ace 3) has been announced by X-Nauts/Psikyo. But that's the only one I'm aware of.

My saturn list of to get shmups would be put on hold if a load of good shmups were released for the psp. As that would mean I would have to buy the expensive psp plus the games... IF the psp gets good shmups i'd probably love it to pieces.

On a side note, I was thinking about this last night, you could probably play a vert shmup on the psp with the psp on its side if you know what i mean. So like your right hand is above your left hand, it sounds like it would be confusing and awkward but I think it could work well. maybe :)

It's not that bad ocne you get used to it. There is a game called Fire Hammer for my Zodiac which orients that screen vertically and it works pretty well.

You could use the shoulder button to fire I guess. Definitely doesn't seem as convenient as the WS though, which had buttons for vertical playing.

Wouldn't it be awesome if they ported Radien III to it?

Yes it would be.

But how do you fit a vertical game on a handheld that's vertically challenged? :?

I've got the Namco Museum collection for the PSP and all the games on that (with the exception of Rally-X) can be played vertically. The shumps also have the option of using the analouge stick to fire.

There is that Space Invaders collection coming to PSP. It is going to have the original, Space Invaders part II, Return of the Invaders, Super Space Invaders aka Space Invaders '91 the Majestic Twelve, and Akkinvader aka Space Invaders '95 The Attack of the Lunar Loonies.

The Atari collection for GBA has a tate mode and it actually controls very well IMO (even on the GBA SP).

Note to self: Buy the freakin' Namco Museum for PSP as soon as possible...

Plus, there are a ton of horzi-verts that could potentially be ported. It wouldn't be too hard to get Mars Matrix or the first Giga Wing up and running on the hardware. Heck, I'd be just fine with the standard "original" mode in most Psikyo home ports if it meant a great shmup for the road.

Could... Could ;)

It's a great little machine and I see no reason why we won't see some shmups soon. Especially if all the emulation gets sorted ;)

it would be interesting to see a vert game take advantage of using the analog stick for controlling how or where you fire

If Gradius V was ported, I'm not sure how long I could hold out before I had to get a PSP.

They would just do that sideways mode like the do in Ikaruga on GC. Wouldn't be easy to control if you turned the screen, though.

I said the same thing in the PSP thread about emulation on the system. It will be neat if we see MAME TATE on the thing but as a PSP owner I can say it wouldn't be comfy.

That could be OK after a little getting used to- just like Klax & Raiden on the Atari Lynx.

Taito's Space Invaders Pocket collection looks darn good- especially being the complete series and the first consumer version of Akkanvader. I'll be getting that Namco Museum as well- the Galaga Arrangement looks at least half decent, even though the graphics could've been a tad better.
Kinect? KIN NOT.
